THE PINK FLOYD - " PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN ", Columbia/EMI Records Ltd. (SX 6157) Mono, 1967..

Very rare, 1967, English 1st issue/matrix (very early pressing), LP issue of the classic Floyd debut album.

Featuring the all-important flipback, front laminated, Ernest J. Day sleeve. Plus, label with original blue Columbia logo - see photo.

Matrix/Stamper numbers

SIDE A = XAX 3419 -2 matrix. Stamper numbers - 1 at 9 o'clock position and GD at 3 o'clock position.
SIDE B = XAX 3420 -1 matrix. Stamper numbers - 1 at 9 o'clock position and T at 3 o'clock position.

English issue and pressing.

Professionally cleaned on my Moth record cleaning machine and then put in a fresh new poly-lined inner sleeve (the original inner sleeve has also been retained and included in the auction - see photo)



CONDITION:

VINYL =  V.G.++ (No deep scratches, no groove damage, no distortion, average spindle trails, etc. Under a bright grading lamp I can make out a couple of more obvious but extremely shallow marks and a few other faint scuffs just visible on the vinyl's surface - although none of these correspond directly to any audible defects. It generally plays pretty well, but there is some very faint occasional surface noise audible during the run-in, between tracks and duting the first few seconds of the quiet intro of a couple of tracks. As the record played, I did hear the odd faint click or crackle in the background from time to time, but generally once the music kicks in that's all you can hear. If I was going with just a visual grading, I would have listed this LP as a straight VG, but my grading takes into account that like so many well-pressed 60s mono records, it wears a few superficial marks well and definitely plays a bit better than it looks.

Overall, although it is not quite perfect and I realise this will affect the value, it is by no means ruined by these minor imperfections and would still make a good honest copy for someone to play and enjoy - perfect copies of this LP exchange hands for a lot of money these days and although this is not one of those museum pieces, it is still a very serviceable copy that would be great for somebody out there to play and enjoy as it was originally intented. Also, perfect copies of this LP (possibly with earlier stamper numbers?) have regularly sold for over £900 in the past, with one copy peaking at £1727 last year (without even disclosing stamper numbers!), so although my start price is set to protect my original investment, I'm happy if that's all it sells for and it could be a quite a bargain for someone.

Note: for the purposes of this listing I have tested this LP on my Linn LP12 Sondek turntable - generally this is quite a critical test, but I must point out that I cannot guarantee exactly how this LP will sound on your turntable - common sense for most... but then this is ebay!!!)


SLEEVE = EX- (No rips, tears, huge creases, defacing, etc. But had to be marked down a bit for general wear particularly affecting the edges/corners and a few smaller thumb creases in the front laminate - see photos for further clarification)
