The Pump "Pum-Pum A Go Kill You (Part One)" K7 tape issued by Pump Intelligence (PUMP 4) in the UK, 1980. Edition of more or less 30 copies. ****** Tape:ex / Cov:ex ****** Impossible-to-find early tape by pre-Nocturnal Emissions Nigel Ayers' first band The Pump, directly from Maurizio Bianchi archive. M.B. and Nigel Ayers were close friends in the late 1970s and it is no surprise that Maurizio received these very rare editions as they came out. Offered here is the ultra limited self-released third cassette titled "Pum-Pum A Go Kill You (Part One)". The Pump was an experimental music group formed in 1977 by Nigel Ayers, his brother Danny and Ian Round. Lots of heavy bass and guitar distortions, cut-up tapes. They did 4 cassette-only releases, only about 30 copies exist of each. The first batch were copied at home. Rough Trade bought them and that just encouraged them to seek out more tapes for the next release. A few years later Masima Akita of Merzbow (who probably got the tape from his close friend M.B.) wrote a review of one of these tapes for a glossy magazine in Japan. For Nigel Ayers the systematic derangement of the senses has never been enough. From the beginning of his career he has sought nothing less than the total disarrangement of reality. Using slowed down voices, sludgy bass, noisy analog synthesizers, guitar and weird effects, these unorthodox statements from his first band sound as if they were made in an atmosphere of cerebral discord. Conventions of musicality are thwarted in favor of shoestring arrangements gelled together by intuition rather than adherence to preconceived formulas. Traversing terrains that range from the psychotropic to psychotic, the collected works of The Pump make for an artifact that is not easily pigeon holed, not now, and probably not in the late 1970s when the group first formed. Classic Industrial meets Avant-garde, hints of Throbbing Gristle and the Cabaret Voltaire are there, and it's clear how these tracks lead to what was later to be "Tissue of Lies".
