It was first published in 1977 by Jay Landesman’s Polytantric Press, with a limited edition of 500 hundred copies,
each with a real safety pin piercing the nose of Johnny Rotten, portrayed on the cover.

‘The Punk’ was written as a homework project by Gideon Sams. This slim volume of only 72 pages is a rough and rudimentary novella but it still serves as a valid cultural artefact, chronicling the punk experience from the perspective of a young man.
Gideon Sams was born in 1962, and after an unsettled childhood and many schools he spent the last three years at Westminster City Grammar School where he excelled in languages. He wrote ‘The Punk’ at the age of 14 years but was subsequently rejected by his teacher. However, it was rescued by Gideon’s mother, who saw in it a chance for social redemption.
“The Punkâ€, which has often been dubbed as “the first punk novelâ€, a ‘Romeo and Juliet’ with safety pins, follows the life of a young punk, Adolph. In the seventeen chapters of the book, we see Adolph hanging outside the Roy with his friends, living in a tower block, finding a job and a girlfriend, going to gigs, pogoing and getting into fights with teddy boys. Gideon Sams has condensed into this novella all the main punk themes: music, bands, fashion, teddy boys, poverty, dole queues, apathy, violence and, definitely no future.
‘The Punk’ is a testament of the punk era, but it is also the proof that Gideon Sams was a talented and gifted storyteller.
He died at the age of 26 years.
