THE PURPLE GANG strikes ORIGINAL UK LP Original UK LP on the Transatlantic label (TRA 174) from 1968. The record and the laminated cover are in VG+ condition.
Very rare ... Original 1968 BRITISH first pressing on the highly sought-after TRANSATLANTIC label. An underground sixties "Swinging London" rock band, this pressing has never been easy to find since the day it was released 52 years ago. The Purple Gang's sole record is an oddity, flickering across a mix of song craft perfection, mod & popsike mixes. Actually, it's an engaging affair, one that grows with each spin of the platter, sometimes even hovering above the sound of the Move & Idle Race. There's surfaces of electric rock and psychedelia and we guess the professional collectors out there will be hip enough to hear what made The Purple Gang "hip" - completely with wholly original material. Big bits of the hippie acid-folk seeps into one of the better and more mysterious cuts, "The Wizard," which features thrilling electric guitar leads. British pop-psych flavors and colors "The Sheik," "Kiss Me Goodnight Sally Green," and their most famous track by far, "Granny Takes a Trip" ... Although they were associated with the London psychedelic scene at the time of their near-brush with fame, they originated in Stockport in Cheshire, in north-west England. In London, they engaged Joe Boyd as their producer, and shared a studio with Pink Floyd as they cut their first single, Granny takes a trip (named after the eponymous shop in the Kings Road). Floyd were making their own first single, Arnold Layne, at the time. Unfortunately, the BBC spotted the word trip in the title and assumed it to be a reference to LSD. They banned the record from their airwaves. Also noticing that the band's lead singer at the time (Pete Walker) was nicknamed "Lucifer", they said that the group "would not be tolerated by any decent society". "The Purple Gang strikes" was released in 1968, but failed to sell - as a result of being blackballed by the media. Pirate radio station DJ's such as John Peel praised the group, but without backing from the big record companies, fortune would elude them...
