(NM or NM-) NM records are shiny with no visible defects such as writing, stickers or needle marks on the labels. The album cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits or any signs of human handling. It also will have no ring wear.

(VG+) or (Excellent) May show some slight signs of wear, including light scuffs or very light scratches that do not affect the listening experience Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK. The cover might be marred by a cutout marking, small hole punch, a cut in the spine or a promotional stamp and even a tiny bit of ring wear.

(VG) Have more obvious flaws such as lack of gloss, groove wear, light scratches and needle marks. When played there will be surface noise that will not overpower the music overall. Noise in the passages, between songs is common. The cover may have minor seam splits, writing, tape, stickers, ring wear and scuffs.

(VG-) Is just a compounding of the VG category. Many obvious flaws but if the record is rare, may very well be worthwhile. I usually do not list records lower than the above grades.

Remember, when you are bidding, most of these records are usually 50+ years old and have been out of print for a very long time. When you consider that, damage, loss, and normal use or wear has reduced the market to the point that few of these wonderful treasures are even available today.

FROM MY PERSONAL COLLECTION: You are bidding for the rarest of all Platters albums. Although the Goldmine Price Guide says this album was recorded in 1957, it was recorded in 1956 on the Federal Label K-12-99 on side A and K-100 on side B. This is the Black Federal Label with Silver Print. Also the original Federal Album Cover. This rare classic is valued for $1,600+ NM in the Goldmine Price Guide and this record is a pleasure to listen to. It also should be noted that the first song on side one, Only You, is the original and recorded on the Federal Label in 1954 as a 78 RPM and 45 RPM. (Mercury Records later released a different version in 1955 and was an instant million+ seller). The original group, those on this album, includes Tony Williams, David Lynch, Herb Reed, Paul Robi and Zola Taylor. The 54 year old album cover has stood the test of time, well preserved, in wonderful condition for its age and will be a welcome site in your Music Den. There is no discoloration, ring wear, writing, or wrinkles, just a few small scuffs and lower right corner crease. The seams were carefully repaired professionally years ago, in order to preserve and maintain the integrity of the rare and historical album. So few are left to own and admire. The liner notes in back are clean, with just slight discoloration. The black, shiny record has retained its rich, glossy look and the labels clean, showing few light spindle marks. Side 2 has slight wear around the spindle hole. I inspected this rare classic under a 100 watt light and there were no feelable scratches or groove lines, just some scuffs/light surface scratches/paper cuts and a slight warp that did not affect an outstanding listening experience. O played the record just prior to listening and did not hear a skip, stick, loud pops or irritating hisses, just a few light pops or hisses, primarily between some of the songs. The songs include; Side 1, The original, Only You, Hey Now, I Need You All The Time, Maggie Doesn't Work Here Any More, You Made Me Cry, Tell The World. Side 2, Voo Vee Ah Bee, Give Thanks, Shake It Up Mambo, Love All Night, I'll Cry When You're Gone, Roses Of Picardy. This is one of the most difficult R&B albums ever recorded. Federal was owned by King Records of Cincinatti, Ohio. Based on the Goldmine guide, the album cover is graded a strong VG, the overall quality of the listening experience VG+ and the record VG. There is no reserve.
