Description
The Red Crayola / God Bless The Red Krayola (and All Who Sail With It) – International Artist Records IA-LP-7 (Stereo)(1968)(RE)(US) ...This auction is for a classic psychedelic rock Record on U.S. vinyl. It has a turquoise blue label with no mention of Masterphonics.
Far gentler than, though equally quirky as, their maiden effort, the Red Krayola's second album was a series of miniatures that, though far more restrained than Parable of Arable Land, was a much more solid indication of the direction Mayo Thompson would explore over the next few decades. Thompson's wavering, quizzical voice intones disjointed but evocative lyrics that may appear to be non sequiturs. Odd time meters and musical shifts do their best to defy conventional rock song structures. It's not very poppy, no, but if the description sounds foreboding, be assured that as experimental rock goes, it's far warmer and friendlier than the norm.
This album was just opened enough to see the label variation (seal has not been opened all the way). The Record (turquoise label with silver print) and Cover are in excellent (Mint) condition. The second album from these Texas experimentalists is a marked change from its predecessor, PARABLE OF ARABLE LAND (released under the original spelling of the band's name before the famed crayon company took legal action). The auspicious debut was a completely unfettered kaleidoscope of jumbled sounds defying traditional roles of harmony and melody. GOD BLESS THE RED KRAYOLA, however, is more of an audio collage, with odd, disparate elements carefully arranged in a non-linear but aesthetically pleasing flow.
While psychedelic strangeness still reigns, the band embraces song form throughout most of this album, albeit a warped and fragmented song form. Most of the songs, which espouse a dadaist stance in both music and lyrics (sample title: "Ravi Shankar: Parachutist"), are under two minutes long. The cuts break rapidly into each other, giving the feeling of an LSD-soaked slide show prepared by a group of high-concept deconstructionists.
