Prior to the release of this album, The Replacements botched a big showcase on ‘Saturday Night Live’ and dismissed original guitarist Bob Stinson. The dust hadn't settled when the 'Mats headed down to Memphis TN to record with producer Jim Dickinson. Dickinson gave The Replacements a full-blooded, muscular production, cranking up guitars, hauling out an upright bass for Tommy Stinson, and bringing in horns -- even strings -- to flesh out Paul Westerberg’s songs. This was The Replacements as professionals and, ever the contrarians, they strained against it -- albeit only sporadically and underneath the surface -- with Westerberg's outsider stance calcifying into the invigorating bitterness of I.O.U. and I Don't Know. These two proto-slacker anti-anthems are the only times the group's self-sabotage surfaces here, as the band members pretty much give themselves over to Dickinson's studio savvy.
The fancy accoutrements would seem like the antithesis of The Replacements’ spirit, but Dickinson's grand production merely blows the 'Mats up to epic scale, leaving their essence intact. The Replacements never sounded better with a bigger production than they did on this recording, so it's hard not to see it as the one that got away, the record that should have been the breakthrough. Then again, The Replacements don't make sense as a success story. As it turns out, this was the last time they could still shoot for the stars and seem like their scrappy selves and, in many ways, it was the last true Replacements album.

Notes: Minimal surface noise. A good cleaning is all this one needs.
LABEL GRADE: VG+
Notes: No ring wear, spindle wear, tape, or writing. Standard purple Sire purple circle on yellow/orange gradient; text is black on yellow/orange gradient.
SLEEVE GRADE: VG
Notes: Original plain white paper with b&w photo collage on one side and liner notes, ghosted b&w artwork, and track listing (black text on white) on the other. No writing, no stains, no tape, no yellowing, some crinkling. Two-inch split at center of bottom edge.
JACKET GRADE: VG+
Notes: Barely visible ring wear. No marks, no stains, some crinkles. Edges and spine (readable) are in fine shape. Corners are slightly worn. (See my original scan.)

Note: I haven't cleaned this 32-year-old record because everybody seems to prefer their own methods. I'll leave the cleaning up to the buyer. Also, I'm not a professional vinyl seller or buyer. This comes from my own collection. Bought at The Record Exchange, downtown Blacksburg VA.
