Description

 • Artist: The Richie Gilbert Ensemble
 • Album Title: The Richie Gilbert Ensemble
 • Format: LP
 • Label: Chestnut Records
 • Country and Year of Release: USA, 1978
 • Cover/Record Grade: VG/VG+ (Much of the album plays as graded or better but there are intermittent short sections that have something (not scratches) that causes clicking.  Might be a manufacturing defect, but I’m not sure.)
 • Other Info: Here’s the review from Acid Archives: “A lost in time folk-rock and singer-songwriter vanity release from a well-educated Californian, in a generic ocean cover.  The ’60s flavor is so strong that the release year looks almost like a typo, but for experienced private press hounds, this is hardly a drawback.  With acoustic guitar picking and light combo backing, Gilbert delivers sincere 3-minute tunes that echo Dylan, Donovan and Village folkies, nicely done but a bit generic sounding.  The flowing “Lovely Lady” reflects an obvious Ron Elliott/Beau Brummels influence, while Gilbert generously hands over the vocal spotlight to a female friend on a couple Mamas & the Papas-inspired numbers.  This LP seems to get better the more retro it is, and in that regard, as well as its overall sound, it’s reminiscent of Billy & Sandra Stinson, or a more amateurish Homestead & Wolfe.  An odd, rarely seen little bird.”  You can hear some samples of the album here: richard gilbert - YouTube
