Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. Label/Format: Decca, very first format with track four side one listed as ‘Mona’ – this very quickly changed to ‘I Need You Baby’. These first ‘Mona’ labels are quite rare and elusive. These have matt textured surfaces and the deep ring ridge. All other details and credits can be clearly seen on my label pictures.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, still fresh looking and attractive. Spindle marks are around moderate in number, arguably less for an immensely popular record, and be very assured, this record plays superbly thoughout with barely anything unwanted. Both playing surfaces have very few, and only minor surface marks with NO penetrating stylus scratches. The spindle alignment marks do not relect in number of plays – depending on what records were played on – contacting the spindle to the hole could prove tricky, and often difficult on record playing furniture that obscured the spindle. I know this for a fact, as my parents owned a radiogram and utmost care was always needed to avoid damaging the record using the label as a guide.

Warps or Lateral Movement: Assume all records I offer have no significant warping or lateral movement to cause sound or tracking issues. All should play fine even on budget turntables.

Rarity: The album itself moderate, this sold well. However, conditions are the paramount factor for any popular mono record, and as stated, this copy is impressive and sounds superb. Not only that, this copy is one of the earliest standard issues made. It includes the track ‘Mona’ on the lable AND on the flipbacked cover. Both changed quickly to ‘I Need You Baby’, the word ‘Mona’ for track four is deemed an error. Yes, an earlier example exists that plays the song ‘Tell Me’ with a shorter duration, those are very rare and seldom offered. This is NOT that copy, this one plays the correct longer version of that song. However, do not underestimate the rarity of this first flipbacked (most are smooth) cover with the ‘Mona’ song credit and label as well. Few surface this impressive with fantastic clean sound to match.

Brief Info: Amazing to think, this was The Rolling Stones debut album from 1964. An album comprising of 11 classic cover songs and just one original. This is classic RnB and it proved popular. Most fans and collectors will know this album well enough – it ganed them instant success and popularity – and that has hardly diminished up to this very day. This copy includes an impressive original cover (listing ‘Mona’ and flipbacked), very clean record (listing ‘Mona’) and undamaged inner – and importantly – it sounds superb throughout. A rare opportunity for collectors wanting this elusive example.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: and argaubly better for such a vintage piece, these were made with very thin, delicate card and seldom seen this nice. A single format with front Clarifoil laminate, this covers all the folds and ends on two rear flipbacks and the flat spine edge. The main back panel is matt and smooth, it has two flipbacks on the top and bottom (these subsequently changed and dropped to internal construction). As stated, this includes the song title ‘Mona’ that was quickly changed on reprints to ‘I Need You Baby’, making this first print cover much rarer. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press. Includes the vintage polylined Decca inner sleeve that makes no reference to stereo within its text.

Lamination & Front: In usage or handling terms, this front has little to fault. The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with only quite mild dulling around the rim area seen under light, few covers of this amazing age made with very thin card will avoid this are the barest minimum. It has a few fine edge creases, mostly, as usual on the spine and a few laminate sliver crinkles where it has not been adhered perfectly in the factory. This, of course nothing to do with wear and hardly uncommon on Clarifoil laminate on thin card. Just three or four (one tiny) towards the right edge and a few on the edges. This a natural trait. So there are no large lifts or blisters and the lack of usage or handling creasing away from the sides is good, and unusual news. Overall, a front that gives scant clues of age, but the spine has compressed, again hardly unusual. It still looks attractive and the artwork very deep as the early ones were.

Cover Back: I have mentioned the important ‘Mona’ track listing already and only the early examples included that as well as the two flipbacks construction. This matt surface has aged more with moderate discolouration of the card near the edges, and lesser away from. So quite polite indication of age, and personally I have no qualms with that being 56 years of age, and of that there is no doubt with the two rarer aspects it includes. There is barely any rubbing to the black text and artwork and creasing has been avoided as well with no writing. Both the delicate and damage-prone flipbacks are solid and neat with no issues bar a little patchy creasing to their laminate (how many will ever show none, let’s be honest). Their ends neat, clean and avoiding burring or damage. Yes, this back reminds of its true vintage, but still impressive generally as-seen.

Top Edge: Very thin, but still quite straight with no wear or chipping to the very smooth clean laminate.

Bottom Edge: Virtually the same, but even straighter with little to fault.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Mostly sharp with any thickening very little and light, no tearing or splits and guaranteed totally natural. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Thin again, and likely compressed and quite flat. But still solid and quite straight. The text is unworn under the solid and still quite smooth unpeeled laminate.

Corners: Any tip rubs or blemishes very small and light with near excellent shape retained with no knocks, or even creases.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this earliest vintage cover, which is always far more fragile with the external flipback construction. These so often catch, pull and tear if not treated carefully. Even though the back has modestly aged a little, it will prove still prove very difficult to find much better (especially with the rare ‘Mona’ song title include, as far fewer exist of course). This attractive 1960s original sleeve should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A polylined early Decca inner with no reference to stereo records at all, all the text applicable to the mode of the day, mono, it being printed on one side only. The paper modestly darkened with age and has minimal creasing with just a little light crinkle to the bottom corner areas. Two crisp undamaged window circles, the lining still attached and quite clear. All edge folds intact, and even the top opening is still crisp and untorn. This has the British parent No. 800513 with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better, given the age, mode and popularity of this record, it has fared superly and clearly has received very limited usage, and then with utmost care. An impressive, very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed on robust, high-quality Decca vinyl – still for me – the finest and most reliable record manufacturer. Any surface marks few, very light, mostly wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Just put this in context to what most look like these days – grubby, scratched and worn out – this very much on the other side of the vinyl fence and visually a super record that should please many, and maybe, even most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic debut album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with quite a raw full-on production that suits the music style perfectly. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, I barely noticed anything and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available very early copies will outperform this I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a standard stereo system. I am certain this record has been played modestly (the spindle marks not telling a true story), and with due care and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record – I doubt if I could say that on many copies of this now. It will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
