The Rolling Stones : Between The Buttons 6K/5K Boxed Stereo Pressing
This is a later stereo pressing but does play with stunning quality for the vast majority and S1 in particular is amazing! S2 just has a little static but it certainly is not intrusive and there are no clicks or pops.
The cover is immaculate and easily the best example I have ever seen, it has been preserved so well. So near perfect.
The boxed stereo versions were produced between '70 and '72 so are still considerably 'old' and this actual record has hardly been played I am pleased to say. There is some 'bag rash' on the vinyl and this is described below.
SKL 4852 // XZAL-7644-6K / XZAL-7645-5K // UM 1 / CK 1
The audio on S1 is Mint(-) (T4 Near Mint-)
The audio on S2 ranges between Ex+ and Near Mint (although T4 Mint-)
The cover is Mint-
The labels are Mint-
The original inner is Ex+
This is an odd one to describe in a way. I my opinion the record has only been played once or twice and then has been stored inside the sleeve all its life. This has resulted in the poly-lined inner affixing itself to the record which in turn has caused numerous faint wavy lines on the surface and no amount of cleaning will remove them. However, the good news is that it has no affect on the stunning audio quality on S1 and only a minimal affect on S2. Apart from that there are no marks or scratches and I cannot detect any hairlines either. The JT tax stamp can clearly be seen on both run out groove and the labels are near perfect with only a couple of barely visible tiny spindle traces on each.
Play grading
The intro on 'Between The Buttons' plays perfectly and the first verse is equally as good. From start to finish there is no interference and the playback is so strong and deep. A high quality Mint start to the side.
'My Obsession' is of the same standard as once more there is just no 'background' to be heard. No ticks and certainly no clicks or pops. The clarity and definition of the audio could not be any better. Mint
Up next is 'Back Street Girl' and it has only one light static tick on the acoustic intro. Thereafter it plays with stunning precision which is all the more impressive when you consider how quiet so many sections are. It truly is an exceptional version - beautiful Mint- audio.
'Connection' is so close to perfect with only a couple of light ticks in the middle section. They are quiet and totally non-intrusive and Near Mint- is deserved.
'She Smiled Sweetly' has only very minor light static on the intro and then plays with imperious quality for the remainder - just one light tick on the fade out. I actually had to turn the bass level down here it is so strong! This track really does play with incredible depth and throughout. Mint-
'Cool, Calm And Collected' ends the side with superb audio and no interference. This 'Indian' influenced vaudeville number (that's my own description!) has such strong audio and I had forgotten just how good it was! The stunning up tempo end section plays with incredible power and precision and this easily grades as Mint- such is the quality.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
'All Sold Out' on S2 has a little static on the intro and then plays very clearly with no ticks, clicks or pops. For some reason it doesn't seem to play as strongly as the tracks on S1 but perhaps that was just the way it was recorded. There is a little background static every now and then but it is not intrusive. Ex+
'Please Go Home' has some light static on the intro but this soon dissipates. It then plays with great precision and barely any static, just a little more on the fade out. Ex+
The acoustic intro on 'Who's Been Sleeping Here' again has a little static but does not last long. From then on it plays with great clarity and barely any 'background'. The intro is Ex+ but the remainder is Near Mint for sure.
'Complicated' is stunning from the very first groove and has no interference of any kind. Mint-
'Miss Amanda Jones' has only minimal static on the intro and then plays nigh on perfectly with no intrusion on the audio. A Near Mint version at the very least.
'Something Happened To Me Yesterday' ends the side with wonderful clarity and depth. For a final track the playback is so impressive and has only a minor touch of light static in a couple of very brief sections, nothing intrusive. I will grade as Near Mint but the majority is certainly better than that.
In summary this later stereo pressing plays with fantastic quality on S1 and very impressive audio on S2 - in other words S2 is not quite as good as S1! It still plays with great clarity for the vast majority but does have a little static here and there which is non-intrusive in my opinion. There are however no clicks or pops and the vast majority does play very well indeed. The cover is superb - see below!
The Cover & Inner Sleeve
The James Upton cover is quite simply the finest example I have ever seen. It is so close to perfect and the edges and thin pinched spine are exactly that - perfect. As can be seen the corners are incredibly clean and the opening edge is pristine also. The laminated front cover is beautiful (no other word for it!!) and the back cover is so...white! So often marked/stained this has obviously been kept inside a pvc sleeve all its life and has only a small number of faint indentations in one area no doubt caused by a Sticky Fingers zip! A stunning cover in every way.
The original poly-lined inner (dated 10-71) is in excellent condition with no side splits or tears and only a little creasing. It does have 14th March 1972 written in one top corner which also dates it rather well.
