Brief Artist & Album Info: One of several ‘groove’ albums from their catalogue of the 1970s, the opening track gives clues immediately, being heavily influenced by James Brown. Reggae, pop and AOR are all included on this album. The single ‘Fool to Cry’ will be the best-known. This album just failed to make the top spot in the UK peaking at 2. This a fantastic, beautifully preserved copy, owned from new by one collector who immediately cover-protected the wear-prone sleeve – the difference immediately apparent, this is little short of immaculate. Never easy to find with a lovely clean cover and a record hardly played, even the blue inner sleeve is near mint and unsplit.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR MINT: and not an easy one being prone to rubbing and ring wear. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt surfaces. This early example has the very wide robust spine. Printed in England, uncredited. Includes the thin card, blue graphic inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Superb artwork and this one does it absolute maximum justice. Ultra fresh, clean with deep unfaded colour, this is totally unrubbed. The total lack of creasing and sticker issues is always great news, this is very attractive indeed and honestly. I fail to see how this stunning front could look better.

Cover Back: Exactly the same again, this is almost remarkable for a cover this age and format. There is not even a trace of rim impression or ring wear. Both front and back are archive standard.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Mint as-made, not creasing with deep vibrant colour.

Top Edges: Both immacualte, straight and parallel with no rubbing worth of mention.

Bottom Edges: Almost the same with just fine small rubbing near the right ends, indeed that is the only wear on this cover just about worthy of mention.

Right Edge(s), and Type: All edges are very clean, ultra sharp and guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Absolutely stunning mint as-seen. Solid, very thick, straight and robust with no rubbing, fading or wear at all, even to the folds. This folded square, so the edges meet up perfectly flush and parallel. The text nicely centred and fully present. Even this area is a joy to see like this and rarely will any match it these days.

Corners: Any tip rubs minuscule with the spine pair as-made. Virtually mint shape retained with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: Another memorable wear-prone cover, seeing them like this spoils you for others, because they are seldom stored in this condition for these years. Cover-protection gives them the best chance and I doubt if this cover and its contents have seen light-of-day for years. This super-attractive item should please all collectors. This could prove an ultimate upgrade for many fans and cover connoisseurs.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR MINT: again, practically as-made. Very impressive with deep colour, no creasing or ring wear. This has shaped corners and a slanting top entrance with recessing on the front centre, this is very crisp and undamaged, even the edges have remained unsplit which is far from ever guaranteed. No repairs or enhancements, many are even seen taped or crudely repaired, these edges are as made and not even thinned or rubbed. A vulnerable inner to match that immaculate main cover.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR MINT / EXCELLENT(++): a lovely visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even registers. Any other visual blemishes purely within the pressing and nothing whatsoever affects the superb clean sound. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been very well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
