Label/Format: Rolling Stones Records with matt surfaces and ring ridges. These a very gentle hint of texturing.

Label Conditions: All four are very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light, fine and faint spindle marks. For a very popular album, this appears very little played, reiterated by very clean and impressive sound, any blemishes few and this one of the best pressings I have heard for some time.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Moderately scarce, complete early copies are harder. These initially included a full strip of post cards that are getting increasingly rare, especially in mint condition and fully intact. These cards that depict scenes from the ‘Fall From Exile on Main Street’ are so often missing, separated or incomplete. This vintage copy includes all 12, all still se tenant (holding together) and as-made. The records way better pressed than many I have heard. That never to be taken for granted on this quite mass-produced double set. Being honest, the new label was more inconsistent for pressing quality, whereas Decca rarely was. The only blemish noted was around half-a-dozen sporadic clicks on ‘Let it Loose’ near it’s beginning. Under a magnifier, a few tiny pressing marks are evident, but these are a one-off, the rest of the side and all others are superb with sound to match. The cover is notoriously prone to wear and damage, especially the spine, and although not perfect, this is a highly respectable sleeve as well. Both inners and inner-inners are included as well, all in superb conditions. Such examples are now getting hard to find, and for me nothing is more important than audio quality which excels apart from the small, very brief blemish already mentioned. I have heard many that crackle, often badly on all sides with less than pleasing sound – this has avoided that. A very fine all-round, and complete copy.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Regarded by many as their greatest ever. Unlike previous albums, this rampaging double set offers a thicker sound mix and balance that has always been something of a mystery. Faster material, more up-tempo, laden with riffs this is uplifting and entertaining and does include some wonderful songs. ‘Exile’ offered a new sound and direction which most fans loved, and most thought it worked perfectly. This is an impressive complete copy with both inners and one set of 12, still joined post cards, two very well pressed (the one tiny blemish apart as stated) early records and a nice neat cover. For Stones fans needing this classic, this a fine all-round example, not perfect, but it will prove difficult to better.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): and one of the better ones I have seen for a while. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces, central storage and a single thickness front. Printed and made in England by Shorewood. Includes the inners and a full set of cards.

Cover Front: Very fine and light edge rubbing in places, little rubbing and mainly near edges and spine corners. Clean with no sticker issues or marks of any note, this is a very fine front.

Cover Back: The back mainly the same with a fine crease near the top edge, also fine ones on edges that few ever avoid. The main issue is an adhesive smear mark (in manufacture I am sure) that has pulled near the bottom right corner area, the pulls only small and very small (two of). Also a little toning on the edge near the same area. This the main blemish on what otherwise is a very fine, difficult cover. The lack of ring wear both sides is certainly a plus.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The same tone mark inside as per the back, and only small. Fine edge creases again that register little, any ageing or marks again few and light. The central storage area is strong and unworn, another plus for a cover that is hardly really robust enough to hold all the contents.

Top Edges: Thick and straight with any compression light near the left. Little wear on this edge.

Bottom Edges: This storage edge is actually impressive and still holding its shape well with barely any hint of compression or wear. Light toning near the left corner area.

Right Edge(s), and Type (the spine): A sealed edge where most records are stored, these are entered from the centre of the gatefold. This edge has the text which is all full present with no rubbing, also well centred for a change. This surface has minimal rubbing and retains excellent shape with no crushing., any discolouration very light. As stated, the front is single thickness, this is crisp and still sharp, it being naturally protected by the back thick edge, it is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Left Edge: This almost the same as the spine opposite, but has no text.

Corners: To say these are vulnerable and prone to wear is something of an understatement. A little light rubbing to some with any creasing also mild. Fine to very fine shape retained which is actually better than many I have seen. There are no bashes, any evidence of dinks very light and mostly none.

Cover Summary: A fine example of this very fragile early 1970’s cover, one that is likely to prove difficult to find much better. Yes some light wear and quite minor issues, but is a well-known difficult, and arguably not well designed cover to hold two records, card inners and cards. More often seen very tatty, misshapen, badly worn and even torn – this puts a fine example into real context. Not for purists, but many collectors will be than happy with it.

The Illustrated Cards: PRACTICALLY MINT: all still joined with all semi-perfs intact and very song indeed. Clean, fresh with no creasing. The white backs are ultra clean and fresh as well, all parts are unaged. Again these are seldom found like this and in most cases missing altogether or incomplete. Now becoming very scarce and very sort after, these are a major and integral part of this set, all all looking new. Copies without them are relatively common, with them, a different matter altogether.

The Card Graphic Inner Sleeves: Both MINT, unsplit and as-made, nothing else to add.

The Paper White Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT, or thereabouts. Unsplit edges, one has darkened moderately, the other less so. One crease on the bottom of the darker on with a tiny nick on the bottom edge.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+) / EXCELLENT: retaining fine shine and fairly solidly pressed, any surface marks are very fine and faint as seen under bright angled light. The one tiny pressing mark on side three that emits around half-a-dozen or so sporadic low to medium clicks, the only blemish I noted on my play-grade. No penetrating stylus scratches and sound quality very high for almost all songs. Visually impressive, clearly little used records that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This landmark classic album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything else to fault bar the tiny mark clicks as stated several times. I have probably never heard a ‘perfect’ copy of this album all the way through – some have crackle and pressing noises which this has almost entirely avoided. The very brief small blemish apart, this up there with the best I have heard for sure. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any other contact sound minimal to none, this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*, the tiny mark apart (and it really is pretty tiny). Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been fairly well stored and the records certainly carefully handled. Nothing bar the brief blemish at the start of ‘Let it Loose’ spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these wonderful records. Knowing this album well enough, I know they will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended, unless ‘perfection’ is mandatory.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
