This year its The Rolling Stones and their 60's Decca releases. These arent my "ultimate upgraders" they are locked away and I'm pretty sure some grandchild or other will get their sticky mits on them one day, but nice clean original copies mostly in EX+ condition. DETAILSLet It Bleed finds the Stones really hitting stride in their new dangerous phase, even though it's really a transitional album. The too-soon-departed Brian Jones appears on two tracks "Midnight Rambler" and "You Got the Silver" while Mick Taylor, fresh off his stint with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, joins the band and appears on a pair of tracks himself.
And while Beggars Banquet is the album where they found their voice and identity, Let It Bleed is where they take off and fly with it. And the results here were downright epic. "Gimme Shelter" opens the album on a note nearly as apocalyptic as "Sympathy for the Devil" did.
Whether true or not, the story behind Merry Clayton's passionate vocals resulting in her miscarriage adds even more pathos and danger to the song. "Midnight Rambler"'s depiction of Jack the Ripper also adds to the myth of the band. Most every other track here is a standout, from the incredible anthemic "You Can't Always Get What You Want", to the Delta blues inspired title track, the passionate cover of Robert Johnson's immortal "Love in Vain" and even the throwaway self-parody of "Country Honk" as a white-trash version of their mega-hit "Honky Tonk Women" complete with country fiddle, drunken vocals and blaring car horns.
At this point, there was no stopping the Rolling Stones juggernaut as they staked their claim as "the World's Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Band" as well as the most dangerous band around. And even their life-imitates-art performance at Altamont late in the year merely added fuel to the fire. Yet they would spend the next few years building on even these lofty accomplishments even as their rivals, the Beatles, were disintegrating. Needless to say, the Stones would roll into the '70s on a deserved high note.
