Label Conditions: Both in superb condition: very clean, fresh and attractive with only two or three light and fine spindle marks each side. This wonderful and still early copy appears hardly played, and this reitterated by fantastic, little short of perfect sound.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 126 grams. A fine solid weight.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: This album sold well and even unboxed stereo copies are not that hard to find. However, complete examples that have been played little are a far different matter. Issued in 1969, the unboxed format was soon to be changed to the boxed label design, so this is still an early example. It has a superb cover (WITH Sticker) and inner, and the poster is still the matt, thin paper style of the first made. This is little short of immaculate as well and unmounted. Early complete boxed copies I feel are actually rarer than the first issues that most fans bought. Only initial boxed label copies included the cover ‘poster’ sticker, this cover has the ‘POSTER INCLUDED’ on the back as well, this being quite unusual. The front sticker is immaculate and is 100 per cent as per factory applied. As close to impossible to remove without causing pick marks or edge creases as possible, this has NONE whatsoever. The inner, although creased, has no edge splits and is the rarer one without the bar cover of the credit details. Both record and cover are in gorgeous condition as is the sound quality which is little short of pristine. This particular combination is actually as the rare boxed mono label copy that was also offered the same for the briefest time. So not only is this an unusual variant, it is highly elusive, especially like this. For Stones fans wanting absolute top sound quality with all the trimmings, this is never to be dismissed lightly.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Another gem from the same collection as the superb Led Zeppelin ‘III’ I am also offering. The owner buying these albums from late 1971 onwards and (sometimes) just missing out on the very first issues. So, although not a very first issue, it is always a real pleasure offering a very clean boxed label copy with a superb stickered cover, unsplit inner and ultra clean, unmounted poster. One of the greatest albums ever made by one of the world’s major acts - a truly essential album to any serious vinyl collector. By the end of the greatest decade in popular music, the stereo mode had largely replaced the ageing mono format and of course, this a true stereo record, the mono version being mixed down to single channel from it – so not a true mono as such. The last Rolling Stones album to feature the presence of the band’s creator, Brian Jones. It was a brilliant culmination of all their musical influences throughout music’s decade. The power of the opening track, ‘Gimme Shelter’, will haunt many forever with the memory of the Altamont murder, Jagger’s top hat and scarf and the death of the 1960s. The repeated line, ‘It’s just a shot away’, complements the repetition of the naively profound lyric of the album’s last track ‘You can’t always get what you want’. The filling in-between, like the layered cake on the cover, is equally delectable. This copy on offer is complete and all parts (the inner creasing apart) in superb conditions. All the individual parts are graded and described below.

Cover Condition and Details: EXCELLENT(++): and this hardly does this lovely old cover justice – this is a beauty and as close to a full Mint(–) grade as it gets for me. A single format, the front is laminated with Clarifoil and has the original sticker on front (which is superb, unpicked or removed as can be seen in my close-up picture). The laminate covers all the folds and ends on the back via the spine edge. It has no mono/stereo indicator hole and is the only one of these I have seen with the ‘POSTER INCLUDED’ text on the back (top right) to also include the front promotional poster sticker. It was printed in England by Clout & Baker. Includes the matt, thinner paper poster and uncovered text inner sleeve.

Cover Lamination and Front: Firstly, can I make this clear, this cover is made from thin and delicate card making this sleeve very vulnerable to most forms of wear. This front looks fantastic and very fresh with a rich shine and super clarity, the famous cake (famously made by English celebrity cook Delia Smith) will rarely be found better. The laminate has total adhesion and that in-itself is rare. Most have spine lifting or other blisters, this has NONE, and that makes a huge difference for visual beauty, and I consider a massive bonus. Not only that, this one has avoided any major creasing, just one half moon, any others tiny, very fine and faint, mostly as hairlines near the edges. Viewed normally full-on, barely anything shows. Even under angled light, barely even a hint of friction rubs or dulling, the surface remains clear and very smooth, any marks to the surface are as close to zero as possible. The shine is stunning and clearly this has been cover-protected. The hugely important sticker, so often removed by buyers at time of purchase, is immaculate and has not been picked at or ever removed or tampered with, that will be more than obvious from my close-up picture, it remains exactly as it did when purchased from new and can be described as near mint, any rub traces tiny and faint. Again, I have never seen one of these on this particular cover format and would have been one of the very last to include it. One of the world most cover graphics looking little short of new with rich, deep unaged colour and freshness, I can hardly imagine finding it better.

Cover Back: Not laminated but still looking incredible and I do mean INCREDIBLE – this more than a match for the outstanding front. No rubbing, ultra clean with no creasing, grubbiness or ringwear. Even the laminate end is clean. I still maintain finding this ‘POSTER INCLUDED’ C&B cover with the front sticker as well is immensely unusual and rare. And in this amazing condition, a real find.

Top Edge: Totally unworn smooth and very straight with no bowing. With the Clarifoil laminate which is well known for shrinkage, this often pulls a the cover which means bowing or curl, few avoid it, but this one has. All edges on this cover superb.

Bottom Edge: Almost the same again, any hint of friction traces on this storage are minuscule.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, ultra sharp with barely any hint of wear at all. The odd tiny burr trace viewed end-on, but even this being ultra critical. Record entered on this vulnerable wear prone side which is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. Rarely seen this vulnerable area a great deal better.

Spine and Text: Almost wear-free, very solid and straight with no compression worthy of mention. All text is perfect and unworn under the very solid and uncracked or peeled laminate. One very fine hairline only, smooth and free of scuffs.

Corners: Four superb corners that retain little short of pristine 90 degree shape with no dinks or rubs.

Cover Summary: In terms of classic vintage covers, this is a piece de resistance, and this will prove immensely difficult to match, let alone find much better. Many are carelessly stored, roughly handled or simply used and abused. This one expertly and carefully stored within a protective cover, and the difference immediately apparent. This is near reference standard and could prove the ultimate upgrade for many, it should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: little real wear as such, but some creasing to the corner areas. Made with very thin paper it is unlined and was way under-strength for practicality and longevity, but this is very clean and still fresh. It has NO black overprint on the ‘London Bach Choir’ text that was objected too and many covered up. Unusually, there are NO edge splits or tears and no repairs and it also retains a rich blue colour. The creasing the only reason a higher grade was not considered.

The Poster: MINT(-): and appears little handled or unfolded, quite possibly not seen light-of-day for decades. Fresh, clean and attractive, printed on one side only and on the thinnest of paper, no wonder so few survive like this. This has just two manufactured folds, no splits or weakening on them and no creasing with all folds strong. It lies flat with no curl or bending and is folded very close to square. This has the original flat matt finish, later ones were made thicker with a more shiny surface. Later copies omitted it altogether, thus this poster has always been collectable. Importantly, this is unmounted with no tape or pin-hole damage and the back is very clean and white with any discolouration minimal to none. Unfaded or aged, any handling traces or crinkle equally light and faint. A more than impressive example of this quite elusive insert and it should please most collectors again.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): a supreme visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface traces minuscule even as seen under bright angled light. Barely even run-in in vinyl terms, no heavy tracking worn stylus have been near this one. Few of these will ever survive the years without a small few blemishes, but truly, this has. Visually a superb record that should please all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This evergreen classic – still regarded as one of rock’s greatest ever - plays even above it’s high-grade visual with practically nothing to fault. This has strong sound with no pressing noises or distortions. Sound quality remains impressive with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, the inner sleeves suggests to play it loud. Sound advice as this is not that loudly recorded. Barely even a hint of surface sound, no pops or clicks and as expected, a superb quality record manufactured by Decca. Even the challenging ‘Midnight Rambler’ plays quietly. This track often has surface noise and finding a copy with none is difficult. All sound crisp and fully focused, the lack of usage a massive plus on such a popular record. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am quite certain this record has played lightly and has been superbly stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find better and is unreservedly recommended to all music lovers. With a gorgeous stickered cover and superb unmounted poster – these are major factors and the real icing on the famous cake.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
