Label/Format: Decca – genuine original first press format with the deep ring ridge that actually feels quite sharp against the fingertip. This detail was later removed or changed on later pressings. These have the usual matt, smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both little short of immaculate: very clean, fresh and highly attractive. Any of the tiny few spindle marks are quite fine and show little. Without doubt, this superb record has hardly been played, finding the true first issues like this is immensely difficult, even if it did sell in substantial numbers.

Cat Number: LK 4661.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 142 grams. This a typically solid, high-quality Decca pressing.

Rarity: Moderate in theory, most all Rolling Stones albums sold well but it’s the conditions that make the difference. Finding the true first issues that appear hardly played is extremely difficult – these early beat classics were amongst the most heaviest played and ‘party-pieces’ made. Many loaned out and played to near destruction on massively heavyweight tracking Dansettes, often with blunt stylus stubs. Early Stones albums were recorded loudly with a very raw sound, the grooves and that precious mono sound more intolerant of abuse, few will heard in anything like original condition. Well this beauty has little to fault, hardly played and not trashed by basic, even crude record players of the time. There lies the difference. Both playing surfaces blow away their vintage and there is NO disputing the age of this one with such early matrixes (details further down), and the definitive deep outer ring ridge. Not only that, this copy includes the much rarer flipbacked cover, quickly changed to smoothbacks, these are seldom seen in comparison. It includes as well the infamous ‘Blind Man’ text on the back as seen in my close-up picture. Yes, the cover has a little light wear, gentle ageing on the fragile back, but at 50-years-of-age, I think it’s earned the right. This element not for the perfectionist, but many, if not most will be more than happy – personally, I have no qualms in having gentle reminds of just how old an album really is. Let’s face it, how many antiques do you ever seen on television that are pristine, and these vintage records are fast becoming ‘antiques’ in their own right.

Original Year of Release: 1965

Matrix Nos: XARL-6619-2A / XARL-6620-1A [very very early indeed]

Mothers / Stampers: 1 IM / 1 IM [rare to find a matching pair of first mothers and early stampers]

Brief Info: Most interested collectors will know all about this title already and needs no long histrionics – suffice to say, it was their second album from 1965 and a true RnB classic. I will concentrate more on it’s condition.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single format with a Clarifoil laminated front that wraps around the closed edges and ends via the spine and TWO EXTERNAL flipbacks – these are quite rare and seldom seen. They only came with the earliest copies and were soon removed. Printed and made in England by James Upton on the typically thin card that was very vulnerable and highly prone to creasing and more serious laminate issues. In fact these earliest flipback versions were made with even thinner card than the subsequent smoothbacks that followed shortly after. As stated above, this includes the infamous ‘Blind Man’ text cover, that was later either covered over and then removed and changed. The original polylined inner sleeve is included as well.

Lamination & Front: An album I have had a number of times over my 14 years of Ebay vinyl selling, but very rarely including the flipbacked first-format cover. The card on these in particular is little more than thick paper and immensely flimsy and fragile. So to find this front looking this fine is some achievement. One of the very few also I have seen with NO lifting, even on the spine edge. It retains superb shine, freshness and clarity (as seen on my band close-up pictures). Even under angled light, barely any hint of dulling with any rim impression very gentle and light – that makes a massive difference and is unusual to see. A few light surface laminate creases, again way less than most seen, and when viewed normally, full-on, few even show to any major degree, most being only light anyway. No peeling, no pressmarks and the laminate very solidly adhered – the early very young looking original band portraits looks fantastic and will seldom be seen better. Overall, this front does not give many clues to it’s vintage, the back does a little more, but being unprotected with laminate, that is no real surprise for a 50-year-old, fragile sleeve.

Cover Back: The exposed back with large areas of white has some toned spotting and one small scuff – this near the left edge below ‘Recorded at Chess, Chicago: RCA Hollywood and Regent Sound, London’ text. It is only small and gentle, and crucially, being on a plain white area, register far less, and little really. The toning – this usually caused by minor adhesive smearing from the flipbacks – is largely confined to just below the scuff mark, as well as the bottom flipback end (again the adhesive the culprit). Fact: old seam adhesive and any smear traces will darken and tone with age. Any other spotting tiny and minimal, and overall this back has aged pretty well. A little creasing near the top right corner and odd trace here and there, but the lack of rubbing is a real plus point. This includes the highly controversial ‘Blind Man’ text. Although seen on my close-up picture, I will state this as well – it reads: “Cast deep in your pockets for loot to buy this disc of grooves and fancy words. If you don’t have bread, see that blind man knock him on the head, steal his wallet and low and behold you have the loot, if you put in the boot, good, another one sold!)” Really quite amazing how this was allowed to be sold including this text, even by today’s standards, this is in pretty poor taste. When enough outcry emerged, the back was covered over with a new paste-on sheet with the offending text removed, then it was reprinted without it at all. A crucial factor for this cover are the two top and bottom exterior flipbacks, both are solid and undamaged with no lifting or repairs. The very ends where the adhesive ends, have a very fine darkened ‘line’, this mainly on the bottom one. So a back that gently reminds of age, but no qualms from me, finding this incredibly fragile 50-year-old back better will never prove easy.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both are smooth and retaining full laminate with no scuffs. But not perfectly straight with a litttle bowing or misshapening normal as far as I am concerned. Clarifoil will contract and pull resulting in this (or lifting, which this has totally avoided). Such thin card remaining dead flat over this period-of-time is an immense ask.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, generally sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring light and little as seen viewed end-on. Doing so also reveals just how thin this fragile card is as well. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Again, this spine has bowed a little, but in a neat kinda of way – this is purely natural and near unavoidable on these flimsy first made examples. Still solid with only a little gentle compression in places, the ends are pinched in manufacture. Just a couple of fine hairline crease/cracks, one of which passed through the text ‘No. 2’ on the ‘N’ as seen in close-up. All other text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled, still white laminate.

Corners: Minimal and minor tip rubbing or creasing with fine to very fine shape largely retained.

Cover Summary: The front looks very impressive indeed, the back with it’s toning near the bottom left corner area gives clues to age, but in the great scheme of old album covers, it’s pretty minor. Being considerably rarer than standard ‘smoothbacks’, this elusive flipbacked original format cover will still prove hard to find much better. Not for the perfectionists, but those who actually prefer to be reminded of true vintage, this will please many for sure.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: only marked down a little for corner creasing/crinkle, that few can hope to avoid as a bare minimum. This is guaranteed the original as well – it has NO reference to ‘stereo’ at all with all text details regarding mono usage. It has two near pristine window circles, very clear polylining and no edge splits or repairs. Includes a British patent and ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): and this I feel for a very popular 50-year-old record, is being ultra cautious and conservative. With most seen in very poor, shocking and trashed states these days, this is on the side of the vinyl spectrum. Okay, it has a small few very gentle and fine surface marks, but remember, this is a genuine 1965 pressing – NOT all unboxed monos are the same. This was available and repressed a considerable of times up to 1969 prior to the boxed format taking over. So this copy potentially more likely to have been subjected to the most basic of record players of the mid-60s – this unlikely, in fact it looks very little played at all. This is a hugely impressive, deep cut ridge label original with very few (vinyl) miles on the clock. Simply compare to the usual dross, mostly played into the dirt and sounding unlistenable – I will never offer such rubbish. Both surfaces are very clean, fresh with excellent shine with NO penetrating stylus marks at all. Any of the fine blemishes are ALL superficial and non-sounding – in fact, this played through with no pops or clicks at all. Few dating right back to the earliest date of issue will match or better this for lovely looks. One to please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fantastic record plays impressively with very little to fault. Strong, mostly very clean sound - sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and detailed production. This has a lovely raw presentation that was just perfect for its vintage. Quite low-fi, but that is how Oldham and the Band wanted it to be. Jagger’s vocals arguably a little over ‘miked’, and spiky, but almost certainly deliberate to sound more forward on the record players around at the time – indeed the Oldham Decca Marianne Faithfull albums have the same type of sound. Recorded loud and full-on with a punchy sonic delivery of the music and vocals. It does sound quite basic, especially when played on a highly revealing Linn LP12 stereo turntable that I use for all my records. A mono record not really designed to played on such equipment, but this stood-up well, even under such close scrutiny. Any loss of clarity or unwanted sound was minimal to minuscule and this is an exceptional clean pressing – I would expect little else from Decca. No piledriver thick, heavy needles have ruined this one and no tracking issues*, I doubt if its been on a turntable more than a very few of times – I will never guess how many, how can I? – I did not buy this from new. Again I state, I heard no pops or clicks and any surface sound was minimal and faint, most songs play with none at all. I have found this one of the most difficult Rolling Stones albums to find this clean, probably due to the considerable age and the forward sound that is easily ruined. But nothing of any note spoilt the experience – unless digital silence is mandatory – and good luck with that on a record like this. Indeed, this will prove a considerable upgrade for many. Just the merest hint to remind what you are actually listening to – a 50-year-old mono (and very popular) record. It will take an immense, near unplayed copy to better this significantly, and it merits strong recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Blue moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
