Label Conditions: Both in superb condition, very clean, fresh and attractive with just one faint spindle mark on side one. A rare example of this classic appearing hardly played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: The first album on the new Rolling Stones Record label and first to feature Mick Taylor as a full-time member replacing Brian Jones. A wonderful album and a true classic that includes the popular single ‘Brown Sugar’, along with varied material, some quite dark. Famed for it’s zipper cover which was based on an idea by Andy Warhol and designed by Craig Braun, many regard it as the greatest album cover ever made. Inside, and beneath the zip lies a pair of white pants and text ‘Andy Warhol - this photograph may not be etc’. This copy has the standard straight edge zipper as seen. An impressive copy for looks and sound, it has always been a challenging set, this one proved an enjoyable experience.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably much better still, only marked down for the usual marks on the back from other zippers, these are rarely ever avoided, here only quite small. A single unlaminated cover with a third ‘dividing’ sheet of card piece inside. Matt finished with the standard UK zipper . Manufactured in England, uncredited. Includes the insert sheet that was printed by Richard Davis Ltd, also the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A very impressive front with a fully working unrusted zipper as seen. This the smaller, standard UK-made version. Some early ones made in Germany included a large rounded zip. This lowers and raises with ease with no sticking or heavy pulling required. The fragile and perilous cut belt area above it is clean and undamaged with only a very fine crease trace on the small part at the very top, there are no tears or repairs. Quite unusual to find these cut areas so clean and neat, they often caught on protective sleeves which tore or damaged these parts. Once it happens, there is nothing that can be done of course, so great care is always required when handling or storing this unforgiving cover. A clean, fresh-looking front that is very attractive indeed, it has no sticker issues and hardly rubbed at all. Any blemishes minimal and faint, this front would grade with at least an extra plus on its own and will prove hard to find better.

Cover Back: The back has a couple of zipper marks in the usual areas that are rarely avoided. Beneath the tab part of the zip is a sharp point, when the tab is raised, it is exposed. With covers pressed together in boxes for shipping, these parts pushed into other covers, hence, most were seen with marks from new. So any marks are almost considered ‘normal’. A couple of small ‘whites’ near these marks, but this back has far less than most I have seen. I emphasise, the long white line mark is NOT a scratch, it’s part of the artwork. Other than the almost obligatory zipper marks, there is little else to fault on this fine back(side).

Cover Inner Sheet: From what I can see, this looks perfect with white pants and midriff artwork looking practically as made with the Andy Warhol text matter present of course.

Top Edges: Minimal traces of any thickening or burring and NO tears or splits. The record enters on this top edge and rarely is it seen much neater than this. One hundred percent guaranteed untrimmed with NO repairs.

Bottom Edge: Straight and hardly worn at all.

Right Edge(s), and Type: This edge is closed and it’s edge very neat with barely any rubbing.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with only quite gentle compression as seen, the ends pinched in manufacture. All the text is pristine also as seen.

Cover Summary: Not quite perfect due to the usual zipper marks on the back, but will any version of this groundbreaking cover ever avoid it totally? With a clean and untarnished, fully working zipper and the card aged or worn little. This should please many fans and collectors. Regarded by most as a ‘classic’ sleeve and a work-of-art with it’s links to the artist Andy Warhol, it will not prove easy to find much better.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain white, unlined inner has little wear. Hardly creased, all edges unsplit with no repairs.

The Insert Sheet: NEAR MINT: clean and crisp, uncreased with very sharp edges. This is little short of as-made.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine, but quite lightly pressed. However, the vinyl appears purer than some I have seen with less of the mottle or inherent dulling in the vinyl itself. Hence, this copy plays very well indeed with little unwanted, this never to be taken for granted. I have heard some poor pressings of this album several times, so a play-grade is essential (but this I consider the case for all records prior to sale). This record was often pressed very thin, so this is far from unusual. Any surface marks or blemishes, few, fine and light. The odd light dull mark or two is purely within the pressing and in this case, harmless. A copy appearing very little played on all the evidence. Often these appear dulled with surface marks seen within the pressing, more like the budget labels of the time. With the oil shortage of the early 1970s, recycled or part recycled vinyl was often used which meant less than wonderful sound – all collectors of similar age to myself will remember these well. This copy has minimal traces of such ‘impurity’, thus the sound is superior in all respects. I never take any copy of this album for granted however clean it looks until I have played it all. Loud crackle, pressing noises and even horrible loud distortions – and often on the cleanest looking copies you will find, are far from uncommon. These hidden nasties can be all too apparent on this record and many collectors will know this. A very difficult one to find that will play well throughout, this has little to fault and was a joy to play-grade. Knowing what many copies can sound like, I consider this one almost exceptional, and it should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This landmark classic album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. A way cleaner than average pressing and one to be played and enjoyed. This has quite compact groove width, thus not the loudest of cuts, so it needs to be turned up. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and very detailed sound, better with higher volume. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and that is unusual, there are no tracking issues*. Many I have heard have had inherent crackle and Rolling Stones Records pressings generally were not as reliable as Decca, and certainly were not as heavily pressed. But this is a very clean pressing, and compared to most I have heard, exceptional. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled – often the cover marks were present even from new from covers being stacked atop of each other which meant the zips made marks on the back, all collectors would have seen this before. Little of any note, spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this evergreen classic. One that merits strong recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
