Label Conditions: Both in superb condition: very clean, fresh and attractive with just one tiny spindle trace on side one. A rare example of this classic appearing (and sounding) barely played.

Cat Number: COC 59100 [later pressings had the COC prefix changed to CUN].

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 122 grams. A typical weight for this record.

Rarity: Moderately scarce: this one has the standard smaller zip cover. Initial copies had a heavier ‘PAN’ zip for a brief time then it was changed to this one. The first bigger zip is rarer, but this is a notoriously difficult set for several reasons. Firstly, the cover design means it is so prone to damage as the top belt area is cut and open with two delicate flaps that often tear and even shear-off altogether. The zip itself often tarnishes and can even badly rust. The back is often badly scratched and scored in manufacture storage by other zip covers resting atop each other and finding one with only lighter traces is difficult. But the most important factor for me is the pressing quality of the record itself. Rolling Stones Records were not of Decca quality – their previous label. I have heard a number of examples of this record in either cover that fail to please. Pressing noises, crackle and muted sound (that more on later ones) as these were mass-produced. Finding a barely played example that offers practically the best sound possible is very difficult indeed – and this copy offers just about that. This record without doubt has hardly been played and came from a true audiophile’s collection – like most else I am currently offering. It appears hardly played and sounds superb with barely anything unwanted – a couple of milli-second crackle traces if being ultra critical, but little else. It ranks as one of the very best I have heard for some time and, this being my personal favourite Stones album, it was a pure delight to play-grade. So not a very first cover, but this is still early and in very fine all-round condition and if, like me, sound quality is of paramount importance, this copy really delivers. Such examples are scarce.

Brief Info: The first album on the new Rolling Stones Record label and first to feature Mick Taylor as a full-time member replacing Brian Jones. A wonderful album and true classic that included the ever-popular single ‘Brown Sugar’ with varied material, some quite dark. Famed for it’s zipper cover which was based on an idea by Andy Warhol and designed by Craig Braun, many regard it as the greatest album cover ever made. Inside it, and beneath the zip lies a pair of white pants and text ‘Andy Warhol - this photograph may not be etc’ (as seen on my close-up picture). This copy includes the insert, the smaller, regarded as ‘standard’ zipper and a very impressive record that sounds terrific.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear & Damage: Very High: the buckle part of the front especially is so often seen torn and even with pieces missing. The backs usually heavily indented by other zipper covers pressing against them, often badly marked even from new. Finding an unmarked back is nigh on impossible. Logic tells me, these were stacked in manufacture and obviously pressed aside in boxes for distribution, thus few escape often severe marks and deep zip impression.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single unlaminated cover with a third ‘dividing’ sheet of card piece inside. Matt finished with the standard smaller UK zipper. Printed in England, most of the PAN zipper covers are German. Includes the insert sheet that was printed by Richard Davis Ltd.

Cover Front: An attractive front with little wear. The fragile buckle part is totally untorn with NO repairs, each part has only a gentle surface crease with only very modest visibility. Hardly any other creases at all and any marks are few, gentle and faint as seen under angled light. Maybe a small few very faint adhensive smear dulls near the right edge. These covers with their unique design were, I presume, hand constructed and glued, probably as quickly as possible, so any minor glue smear is common, but in this case, light, light and faint. An example that retains good looks and freshness. The teeth of the zipper have darkened a little over the years but the main pull top part is still shiny and clean. It still works too as can be seen on my pulled down picture – many sieze-up over time and can only now remain static which is not the case here.

Cover Back: An impressive back with quite possibly the least zip impression marks I have seen. As stated above, these were packed in boxes for distribution against each other, and practically all got scored and scuffed by facing covers. With thought, a card insert between each should have happened, but I think it unlikely it ever happened. This back has one central press mark which is only small and further up, only a very small few dot like press marks in perfect alignment with the front zip top pull part. NO long scuffs or scratch marks which is a major plus as most will have them and apart from ultra faint handling traces (being very critical) on the matt black area, this has little else to fault. The lack of ringwear too is another plus.

Cover Inner Sheet: From what I can see, this looks perfect with white pants and midriff artwork looking practically as made with text details mentioned above (as seen on my tricky taken photograph). A small back of zip impression if being padantic, but this is totally unavoidable of course.

Top Edges: Minimal traces of any thickening or burring and NO tears or splits. The record enters on this top entrance and rarely is it seen much neater than this. One hundred percent guaranteed untrimmed with NO repairs.

Bottom Edge: Again neat with any rubbing very light and faint.

Right Edge(s), and Type: This edge is close and it’s edge very neat with barely any rubbing. Also this edge has the card end that is stuck down to finish this cover off. This fragile end is ultra crisp, neat and solid and has clearly never come unstuck. Faint transparent adhesive traces are seen under light near the top if I really have to be that critical.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, but neatly compressed (possibly like this from new, but that is only an opinion). All the text is pristine as seen more now from back viewing – my close-up picture was taken with my way down on the floor to view this underside. Most, if not all of the PAN zip covers were made in Germany and that information is on the spine bottom – clearly NOT the case on this one which is British.

Cover Summary: Not quite perfect, but will any version of this groundbreaking cover ever be? This is a very fine and importantly, attractive example of this still early-made cover with it’s COC number. Regarded by most as a ‘classic’ sleeve and a work-of-art with it’s links to the artist Andy Warhol. The zipper itself neat and still working and the least zip back impression I have seen, certainly for some considerable time. All considered, this is an exceptional standard issue UK sleeve, it should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the plain white, unlined inner has little wear at all but has mild discolour and toning spots. Barely any creasing, two crisp window circles and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

The Insert Sheet: MINT(-): crisp, uncreased with very sharp edges. The toning spot hint if viewed point-blank, but this is little short of as made.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): a superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite solidly pressed. Any surface traces tiny, very few and ultra faint as viewed with utmost scrutiny under bright angled light (and look very hard). A copy hardly even played on all the evidence, and not untypical from it’s source. The playing surfaces look ‘purer’ and cleaner in manufacture than many I have seen. Often these appear dulled with surface marks seen within the pressing, more like the budget labels of the time. With the oil shortage of the early 1970s, recycled or part recycled vinyl was often used which meant less than wonderful sound – all collectors of similar age to myself will remember these well. This copy has minimal traces of such ‘impurity’, thus the sound is superior in all respects. I never take any copy of this album for granted however clean it looks until I have played it all. Loud crackle, pressing noises and even horrible loud distortions – and often on the cleanest looking copies you will find, are far from uncommon. These hidden nasties can be all too apparent on this record and most collectors will know this. A very difficult one to find that will play well, this offers the cleanest sound with barely anything unwanted and has never been abused by any heavy tracking stylus. In fact the owner had a mega system for a sizeable collection and this – and others coming now and later are the same. This difficult disc should please most collectors and it will never prove easy to find better.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This landmark and classic album for most-all, plays up to it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. A couple of milli-second crackle traces (being ultra critical), blink and will miss them, and no pops or clicks were noted. A way cleaner than average pressing and one to be played and enjoyed. This has quite compact groove width, thus not the loudest of cuts, so it needs to be turned up. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, better with higher volume. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and that is unusual too. Many I have heard have had inherent crackle and Rolling Stones Records pressings simply were not up to Decca standard, but this is a very clean pressing, and compared to most I have heard, exceptional. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing of any note, spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this evergreen classic. This copy overall, will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
