Label Conditions: Both are very clean, fresh and attractive, spindle marks are fine and show little. The record plays superbly.

Rarity: Scarce. This an even rarer early boxed copy that includes the TXL 103 mono cover that has the factory applied ‘STEREO’ sticker on the back, these are elusive and seldom-seen. Clearly these original mono 3D covers were utilised for the new boxed stereo copies until they ran out. This ‘variant’ copy is listed specifically in the price guides, it is the first example I have seen or had. So this a very first mono cover and includes the flame inner sleeve, simply issued a little later in 1969 when the label design changed and the mono copy now deleted. Companies were loathe to dump covers for catalogue or mode details and simply labelled them stereo with stickers. This example in very attractive condition with little to fault as well.

Brief Artist & Album Info: This Rolling Stones album will forever be compared to The Beatles Sgt Pepper – their 1967 psych album, many of the major acts of this time were producing albums in this style. Satanic Majesties has never received the full recognition I believe it really deserves. For sure, a massive change of direction from the previous albums and it all may have been too much for many of their fans. Often described as a ‘flawed classic’, but I have heard few flaws myself. A brave and compelling album, a little weird (by their standards), but many moments and songs of true genius – ‘She’s a Rainbow’ and ‘2000 light years from Home’ always sound so much better on this ‘proper’ album rather than compilations, and both songs remain personal favourites within their singles catalogue. This album is a barrage of sound with brass, psychedelia and effects, and for The Rolling Stones, a real one-off. For me it’s one of those albums that’s totally essential in both mono and stereo as they sound very different. The mono version offers a more punchy sound with greater bass depth and warmth. The stereo version has wonderful imagery and presence – and of course separation which is so essential for psychedelic music. Take the brass blasting out of the speakers at the very start of side one – it hits you full in the face, and the album just does not let up – this is a very intense experience. Play this album loud and you will be left spinning.

Cover Condition and Details: EXCELLENT(++): this an original mono cover with the 3D hologram graphic front, it was very briefly used for the new stereo label pressings with a factory applied ‘STEREO’ sticker on the back bottom right. This a practice to save money printing new covers until they ran out, these are elusive and not seen often. The back is solid and has NO mono/stereo peep-hole, those came later. The inside is matt and smooth. Printed in England by Robert Stace, includes the fragile ‘flame’ graphic inner sleeve.

The 3D Hologram Picture: EXCELLENT(+): with little more than a tiny few fine and light surface marks seen under light. This one unusually very flat with no bowing and looking magnificent. So often these can react badly to temperature variation or humidity and curl and bow the card which this has avoided. This famous piece of cover art is very impressive.

Cover Lamination: Both sides retain lovely fresh clear shine and clarity with no lifting or dulling of any note. A couple of fine surface creases on the front and one of the back. Colour of the graphics is deep and incredibly fresh and attractive, both surface have hardly aged at all. Remember also, this is the rare mono original cover and few will survive much better. The stereo sticker on the back is simply immaculate as seen in close-up.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb with immaculate graphics, one fine crease near the top of the fold registers little.

Top Edges: Straight, flat and near flush, the actual fold unworn. A little light thickening of the end panel card (seen viewed end-on) from storage inside a quality protective sleeve for many years.

Bottom Edges: Largely as above, but better if anything with less thickening of the card ends.

Right Edge(s), and Type: All ends are crisp and sharp, the front single thickness. The record enters on the back edges, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, very straight and uncrushed with no compression or tilt, this is virtually as-issued and immaculate. Folded square, so the edges meet-up closely together and near arallel. No damage, chipping or wear, all text is unworn under the solid, unpeeled or cracked laminate, also beautifully centred as-seen. Incredibly, the surface and BOTH folds remain ultra smooth to the fingertip without a single scuff or rough area at all, note the mono text as well.

Corners: Any tip rub traces are bordering on minuscule. All crisp and neat with no heavy knocks, the odd tiny tip crease only (spine top, look hard). Excellent or better shape mostly retained.

Cover Summary: A superb first issue mono cover in amazing condition given its vintage, these 3D sleeves are seldom seen a great deal better now. The stereo sticker is a rare detail for collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): with only a relatively mild crease on one top corner. These ‘flame’ inners were unlined and made with very thin paper, hence fragile and seldom seen without edge splits or tears. This had only a tiny central bottom edge split which I repaired as neatly as possible to stop it widening, it barely even registers. Still clean, fresh and unfaded with only light hint of rim impression and no ring wear or loss of ink. I consider this inner near exceptional given the facts, these more often in tatters. Also these were also withdrawn from later copies and replaced with a standard Decca inner.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better with any surface marks very light, mostly quite wispy and faint as seen under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even registers and this plays superbly with little unwanted. An excellent early boxed format copy to please many fans and and collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic psychedelic album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this still quite early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played modestly and with due care, clearly well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. The cover has been protected for many years. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quality Decca record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
