This is one of the best-known Stones live recordings: "Welcome to New York" features excerpts of the Stones's performance at the Madison Square Garden in New York City on July 26th, 1972 -- the very last show of the giant "Excile on Main Street"-tour across North America and also Mick Jagger's birthday. The sound quality is excellent as this recording stems from the soundboard. The performance is superb, the Stones can be heard in full flight! The cover-artwork by William Stout is probably one of the most famous Stones drawings/caricatures around! Multicoloured vinyl. Cover and vinyl in mint condition.

While this recording can be found on legions of live LPs and CDs there is only one original: TMQ, the undisputed queen of historic bootleg labels, found the tape and released it first in 1973! This is the classic original LP! William Stout, cover designer of TMQ and famous for his many great drawings on the covers of live LPs, outdoes himself on this release: this is one of his wittiest and most widely circulated Stones pictures. While there was a first pressing that featured the cover as an insert, this very second pressing has a real printed cover, a genuine innovation at that time. Quoting Clinton Heylin's bootleg bible:

[...] William Stout: "They [TMQ] put out good product. I was proud that they believed their name, "Trade Mark of Quality". They always used virgin vinyl. I had purchased other stuff and I had noticed that TMQ was head and shoulders above the other bootleggers...I kept pushing them to do higher and higher quality production...Eventually I got them to print the black and white illustrations on the covers". Appropriately, the first TMQ bootleg to be graced with a printed sleeve was yet another Stones title. "Welcome to New York" was an eight-song soundboard tape from their Madison Square Gardens stint the previous summer, stolen by some enterprising kid from the mixing desk after the show. Dub [the head of TMQ] had been offered a first generation copy of the tape. For "Welcome to New York", Stout excelled himself. William Stout: "Welcome to New York was done in a Ralph Steadman style...I just like the way [it] came out, all the caricatures...The Stones had something going for them that made almost every cover I did for them one of my favourites. They had a strong clear-cut image, they had defined themselves as the bad boys of rock & roll, and that gave me a lot of material to draw from" [...] From: Clinton Heylin "The great white wonders. This is a very rare original live LP from the 70s, a great collectable for every serious Stones collector as well as a unique and beautiful souvenir for anyone who appreciates the Stones as a live band.

This item has been in my collection for the last 15 years, I once bought it as a hungry kid at a Stones fair for an outrageous price. I am now parting with it in order to fund the purchase of a van for my Garage-band in order to be able to hit the road this year...
