                                                                                                                DETAILS

A fine debut, hinting at the powerhouse combo they would become in a few years. This was a time when the Stones were primarily a blues cover band, which they did a fine job of doing within the confines of a basic two-guitar, bass, and drums format.

Jagger and Richards were not regular songwriters yet, but "Tell Me" is a fine tune showing a surprisingly vulnerable side. And their version of "I Just Want to Make Love to You" becomes a zippy, almost punkish number; other artists that covered this tune chose to emulate the faster pace of the Stones version instead of the slower blues of the Willie Dixon original.

The American version of the album is slightly preferred to the British version. The US version has "Not Fade Away", a Buddy Holly cover that was a single-only release in the UK; "Mona" was excised and placed on the "Rolling Stones Now" album. Other standout tracks include "Route 66", "Little by Little", "I'm a King Bee", and "Carol".
