Label/Format: Mercury – original matt format with smooth surfaces. One deep inner ring ridge.

Label Conditions: Both stunning MINT, a term I will rarely even consider using even if merited, but this record was unplayed prior to be acquiring it. And I do mean unplayed, not by counting spindle marks or guesswork. This rare original American record was still sealed in the original shrinkwrap, I had to carefully open the right edge to access the record. So unplayed means unplayed – but now played just once for my mandatory soundcheck. I will rarely, if ever offer records without checking the pressing quality as many records can disappoint. Especially so on smaller labels, not that Mercury qualifies for that. Just look at the pictures: these are what brand new labels look like. Never handled, no spindle marks or blemishes at all – a virgin record dating way back to 1968 – and a rare one as well. Will another one ever show up like this?

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity & Info: Rare: and even more so with just one very careful play on the clock. The cover still inside the original shinkwrap and apart from the careful right edge split for record access, almost fully intact. The only exception is a small shrink split on the top edge (with a small edge rub) and similar to the bottom right corner tip. The shrink very tight indeed with a little crinkle that clearly over such a vast number of years is the very least to be expected. It even still includes the original American price stickers on the front. And to reitterate the vintage, the prices are 99c or 5 for $3 – can you imagine that? So the cover, although not quite perfect, is probably as close as they come. It looks gorgeous with the main areas never exposed to handling and even the inner sleeve immaculate. The the record rare enough initself and seldom seen out the United States on this format. A psych one-off classic and one collectors will treasure. Rare? – I should say so.

Brief Info: A rare one-off album by this 5-piece American blues-psych band. They were one of the youngest psych bands of the era. they were signed to Mercury Records by Abe ‘Voco’ Kesh who produced the album and is known for his work with Blue Cheer and Harvey Mandel. It includes some superb tracks with great guitar work, fuzz and feedback, the sound quite raw and comparisons to early Love and The Jimi Hendrix Experience are justified. However the band were not fated to last long, lead singer Bill Harper and bass-player Steve Lage left shortly after release and the band folded towards the end of the year. So another elusive American psych gem destined to be a one-off and now greatly sort-after by collectors of this era. This copy appears to have been purchased in the United States and bought here and simply left untouched – stranger things may have happened, but not many. Sealed albums from this time are few rare and seldom seen here in the UK. If you want psych classics like this, well finding this better will prove near impossible.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): purely for two small exposed spots due to the shrink splitting, but other than that, it is Mint as made. A single matt format with the paste-on back panel and gently textured surfaces. Of course, I left the shrinkwrap on the cover but had to open to access the record as I want to hear and play all items on offer with few exceptions. As stated above, it even still has the two American price stickers on the front as seen in close-up. The inner sleeve is included and had a couple of neat edge splits purely from movement, but I have very neatly repaired them to stop them potentially widening in the future. Printed and made in the United States.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None.

Cover Front: Until opened as carefully as I could, this cover had not been exposed bar a smallish split on the top edge and lower right corner. Also a tiny one on the top right corner tip, these will happen as the shrink tightens over time. So the front is practically Mint as made and looks stunning. Beautiful colourful psychedelic artwork that is unlikely to be matched or found better – how could it be really?

Cover Back: Apart from a tiny tip rub on the top right corner, this is again as made. Most collectors will know American covers are very fragile and brittle, they split and rub so easily, so this manufactured protection has done a wonderful job in preserving this wonderful piece of psych-art.

Top Edge: A fairly small rub and gentle crack on the exposed part towards the right where the shrink had split. That apart all else practically as made.

Bottom Edge: Only a gentle surface crack near the right corner, again a small split to the shrink, all else perfect.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear. Viewed end-on, the thicker card can be seen compared to UK and most European covers. Record enters on this edge, this now gently exposed after being opened.

Spine and Text: The spine retains the shrinkwrap up to the very tip of the top corner, again the spine is practically Mint as made with all text pristine and no cracks.

Corners: A couple of small tip rubs but no dinks – clearly the shrink has done it’s best to protect since new, but as stated already, this cellophane will contract and pull, thus split where as it’s very tightest – edges and corner tips the most vulnerable. Excellent to as made shape mostly retained.

Cover Summary: Such a wonderful sight to see a cover this fantastic age in very close to factory-made condition. The tiny few exposed parts (not including the right edge, that has only just been opened for access) apart, this is as good as they will ever get. This beautiful piece of historic psych-rock art should please most collectors. Finding another available one in the UK could prove near impossible.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): I cannot quite grade this higher due to the movement (but very neat) edge splits, now repaired by myself with utmost care and hardly even showing.This also a nice piece of ‘audio’ history with promotional pieces not only for records of the time, but also vintage ‘Mercury Portables’. Two record players, one priced at $39.95 and the deluxe version at $99.95 – those were the days? An unlined inner, printed on both sides and unaged as it had not seen light-of-day since it was inserted into the main cover. Any hints of creasing very fine and faint and as clean as any inner sleeve this great gets. Being fragile and thin, best of course to not store the record inside it anymore, better to use the brand new lined inner sleeve I always supply with all my records.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): so why not full Mint? Well although unplayed (prior to my one careful sound-check play), this has a few very fine and faint surface blemishes as seen more critically under bright angled light. American records seem to mark easier than UK ones, the vinyl ‘softer’ and less resilient to movement or ‘insertion’ marks. But I am being somewhat critical of a beautiful fresh record that had not seen light of day since it was put inside the shrinkwrapped cover. Stating the obvious, records were handled in manufacture after they were pressed and minor blemishes occur can potentially occur on any record, but if anyone can find a better looking (or sounding) copy of this one – well good luck. An amaxing looking visual copy that is ultra clean with a freshness that is rarely seen from US vinyl seen here in the UK, also solidly pressed. A copy played once, by myself and not even run-in. It was very ‘clingy’ to the inner sleeve and with care, gently removed. A time-piece piece of US psych-rock, they hardly get better. If this fails to please all collectors, it could be time to retire!

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive one-off Mercury album plays up to it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault as I guess it really should. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. I think even with a further play or two, it will improve still further as new records do need to run-in to sound at their very best. Any gentle static practically eliminated by my VPI machine. Few copies will even get close, and how many will even exist in this practically new condition? Musically a great album as well – especially for such a young new band – their potential was vast and such a shame they disbanded so quickly. Documented comparisons to early Love and Hendrix are well founded and fans of them both will enjoy The Savage Resurrection as well I am sure. Clearly not a household name here, or probably even in their native America, but it seems they had much to offer. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – a slightly strange feeling to be the first to play a record of this vast age. It will prove nigh-on impossible to find better and this remarkably preserved set merits my highest possible recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
