“MAN OF MYSTERY”
AUTOGRAPH CARD ENVELOPE
FRANKED AND DATED: 18 DEC 1962
C/W original record in very good condition and small coloured photograph of four band members!
Here’s a very nice piece of British pop history; a genuine autographed card envelope featuring six members of The Shadows!
BACKGROUND HISTORY:
The original owner was a big fan of The Shadows and a club member. This record was sent to him at his address in Cambridge around 18th December 1962! He did not keep the original sleeve, but instead used a plain white card. The signatures are unusual because of the history of the band members at the time the envelope was posted.

In October 1961 Tony Meehan was replaced by Brian Bennett and in April 1962 Jet Harris was replaced by Brian Locking, also known as Licorice. Both Bennett and Licorice were old friends from the 2I's days and they had all played together in different scratch line-ups. The Marvin-Welch-Bennett-Locking line-up lasted for only 18 months but convinced the fans, diversified the sound and held its own in the face of the rise of Merseybeat.
“Man Of Mystery” was actually released in 1960, two years after this envelope was date stamped!
THE FRONT OF THE CARD ENVELOPE:
The front of the card envelope has the remains of a sticker, which has part of a hand written address to the fan based in Cambridge, England. The sticker has a typed return address, which is:
Geo. Newnes, 136 Long Acre, London, WC2.
The card is franked and date stamped in red ink and the date is;
18 Dec 1962.
The postage is 6D
This has faded, but under a good light can still be clearly seen.

The card envelope is signed in blue ink:

CARD ENVELOPE CONDITION:
The card envelope is in excellent condition and the original owner has kept it in a safe, dry and clean environment for nearly forty-five years!
The autographs are sharp, clear and obviously genuine! There is no other writing or stickers. The envelope has some minor creases, but no tears, stains or cuts!
The envelope measures: approx 8”x8” or 20cm x 20cm
RECORD CONDITION:
This is a green label Columbia version, record number: DB 4530. The record has been played a few times, but not overplayed, judging from the condition of the labels and the surfaces.
I would grade the record in very good condition.
PROMO PHOTOGRAPH:
The coloured photograph of four band members measures: 5.5” x 3.5” or 1.40cm x 0.9cm and has one diagonal crease down the centre and is still sharp and clean.
This autographed envelope and record will be placed in a plastic wallet and sandwiched between two stiffeners, then posted in a cruciform box.

Excellent:
The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality.
Very Good:
The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch.
Good:
The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches.
Fair:
The record is still just playable and has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise and will have a jump or a skip.
