I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THIS RECORD, SO COPIED A REVIEW FROM A PREVIOUS AUCTION:
I'm unloading some ferocious 60's fuzz-laden biker flick soundtracks, starting with this classic Z-grade flick "The Sidehackers", from 1969 on the Amaret label, and featuring the band The New Life. You might know "The Sidehackers" from the hacking it got on Mystery Science Theatre 3000 - well, it may have been an enjoyably bad movie, but the soundtrack's a whole other story. Hey, any soundtrack that features a song called "Psychedelic Rape" has GOT to be pretty freaky, right? But more about that song later... This KILLER biker flick soundtrack kicks off with "5 the Hard Way", a driving slice of pure 60's rock with vocals, written by the legendary Mike Curb. The mysterious "Ha Lese (Le Di Khanna)" is the stuff that psych heads DREAM of - as you could tell from the title - it's a Harley ride through Bangladesh on acid, and some GOOD acid at that! It's a MASSIVE slab of wild acid psych with soaring fuzz guitar, frenetic flying drums and some INSANE yodelling vocals in some foreign (or perhaps otherworldly) tongue! GREAT off-the-wall unhinged psychedelia here! "Sidehacker" is another vocal cut that attempts to make the New Life into the New Band or something - it's a catchy rural rock track with a definite Band or mellow Traffic influence - sounds a lot like "Feelin' Alright" to my ears. But, of course, all this is just preparation for Side 2, Track 3 - the mighty (and decidedly politically UNcorrect) "Psychedelic Rape" - one of the most ambitious, intense and outright FREAKISH biker psych tracks you'll find ANYWHERE. Had Syd Barrett and Roger Waters been more into Harleys than Vespas, they might have written something close to the sheer insanity that is "Psychedelic Rape". Turn the echo up to 11 - add lots and lots of delay - cue the deranged freeform acid guitar (the kind of messed-up guitar jams that Syd would play on stage for 20 minutes when he was very high) - let the guitarist go WAY out there with some wild, wailing solos - and then add feedback - TONS of feedback - feedback for the feedback, on top of the feedback that's already there - and you've got yourself a good ol' fashioned "Psychedelic Rape". It's an "Interstellar Overdrive" for the Dave Allen set. And then, if that's not enough, the song switches into a staccato violin melody that sounds vaguely reminiscent of Procol Harum or very early ELO/late Move. It's something else, man! The liner notes call "sidehacking" the "newest thrill in racing" and "the grooviest sport" ever, and the New Life "perhaps the top new group in Southern California today." Perhaps. They get off some GREAT ones here on this very RARE soundtrack, one of the harder ones to find in the genre, from 1969 on the Amaret label. And yes, that really IS a working 3-D cover image too!
