THE SMITHS Meat Is Murder 1985 Sire/Rough Trade US 1st Press SRC 1-25269 NM/EX
Meat Is Murder is The Smiths' second album, released in February 1985 and topping the UK albums chart.
Darker and more confrontational than their debut, it moves through the institutional violence of "The Headmaster Ritual," the rockabilly snap of "Rusholme Ruffians," and the desolate closer "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" before landing on the title track's plea for vegetarianism.
This US pressing also carries "How Soon Is Now?" as track B1 — the band's most widely known song, added to the American edition and absent from the original UK release.
This is an original US first pressing on Sire/Rough Trade, catalog 1-25269, pressed at Specialty Records Corporation.
The lacquers are RE1 on both sides, consistent with the heavy pressing volume this title saw during its initial US run.
Confirmed via the "E A S T" embossing in the pressing ring alongside the SR-3/SR-2 lacquer codes in the deadwax.
Mastered by Tim Young at CBS Studios, London. Young cut lacquers at CBS from 1976 to 1993 before co-founding Metropolis Mastering, and later became the first non-US mastering engineer to win a Grammy, for his 5.1 surround work on The Beatles' "Love."
Produced by The Smiths, with "How Soon Is Now?" produced separately by John Porter.
Cream-white gatefold-style single sleeve with the iconic quadrupled Vietnam-soldier image, sourced from Emile de Antonio's 1969 documentary "In the Year of the Pig."
Labels are the Sire yellow-to-orange gradient design with Rough Trade text.
A notable printing quirk on this copy: the back cover's Side 2 tracklist omits "How Soon Is Now?" entirely, even though it's the very track that sets the US pressing apart and is listed on the label itself as B1.
