Extremely rare and highly sought after 1965 UK very 1st pressing of this beat classic on the PYE PICCADILLY label, MONO, NPL 38023

 Matrix Numbers :

  Side 1  NPL 38023 A1 H with stampers "A" and "1" at 2 and 9 o' clock respectively   Side 2  NPL 38023 B1 H with stampers "A" and "1" at 12 and 7 o' clock respectively 

These matrix and stamper numbers suggest that this was one of the very first copies off the first production run.

The appearance of the vinyl (thick, heavy and completely flat) is very good+. Each side of the vinyl has retained much of it's original sheen and has a truly impressive appearance, with all of the deep matt grooves remaining well defined and true. Careful inspection under a bright light reveals a few wispy hairlines on each side and a slightly more discernible (but still surface only) 1cm scuff mark across the end of track 3 and the beginning of track 4 on side 2. There is one mild scratch on side 1 (again, not immediately obvious), however, which spans the end of track 1 and the beginning of track 2 resulting in 5 mild clicks at the end of track 1, 5 mild clicks during the interlude, and seventeen mild clicks at the beginning of track 2. Despite these relatively minor blemishes, still highly presentable.

The Garrod and Lofthouse front laminated sleeve is good+. The top and bottom edges remain in very good condition with barely any scuffing but there is considerable laminate creasing towards each of the corners and a further 6 obvious 2cm laminate creases on the front side perpendicular to the spine, three of which impinge upon the spine itself. There is also scuffing towards the top of the spine which includes the corner. The top left and bottom right front side corners also include some general creasing. The reverse side suffers from some mild age discolouration, has a sellotape residue margin along the opening side, and further laminate creases on the flipbacks themselves (see photos). The good news is that there are no rips or tears and all writing is still perfectly legible, with no unwanted writing.

The labels are very good+. Just a few very minor "nicks" and faint evidence of a number of very light spindle trails on each label adjacent to the centre hole.

Finally, the quality of the audio is very good. There is the occasional mild click (I'm talking about a handful in total), and some light background "fuzz", which is low level and does not really seriously intrude upon the overall very good audio quality but it is there and is most obvious at the beginning of each side; in fact this background fuzz becomes less and less noticeable as each side progresses. I suspect that a professional clean would go a long way to rectifying this. The exception to this is the aforementioned mild scratch on side 1 (not immediately obvious) which spans the end of track 1 and the beginning of track 2 resulting in 5 mild clicks at the end of track 1, 5 mild clicks during the interlude, and seventeen mild clicks at the beginning of track 2. So, not perfect by any means but each track still makes for a great listen.

Comes in the original EMI inner (a sought after item in it's own right!) with no tears or splits and still fully functional. Excellent!

In summary, an overall impressive and highly collectible very first pressing of this sought after 1965 beat classic, despite it's obvious blemishes.

I take great care in removing the record from the outer sleeve in order to prevent sleeve damage in transit and I always insert the vinyl, outer sleeve and inner into a clear plastic sleeve, thus adding further protection.

Mint

Description: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Excellent

Description: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packag­ing might have slight wear and/or creasing.

Very Good

Description: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable sur­face marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good

Description: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

Fair 

Description: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for prop­erly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

Poor

Description: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

Description: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.
