Label/Format: RCA Victor – matt, smooth surfaces. Pressed by Decca and the first and original label format with the deep groove ridge inside the rims.

Label Conditions: Both little short of immaculate, being very clean, fresh and highly attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle traces – hardly any in fact – and no wear around the hole area. This came from the same superb collection of Elvis Presley albums I purchased a couple of years ago. Just about everything in that collection was hardly played and many almost reminded of new.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. A typical very solid from Decca, for me still the very best and most reliable manufacturer of vinyl records.

Rarity: Moderately common: that is simply being honest. A little more difficult as an original in stereo, 1965 very much the era of the mono records. And conditions are a significant factor of course. This album sold in vast numbers and dominated the album charts from issue up to ‘Sgt Pepper’, and beyond. Being quite a long album, the grooves are quite compact and the playing surfaces are very easily damaged and scratched, and many were subjected to harsh treatment from many plays on heavy-tracking, most basic of records players, especially the mono version. This one, like virtually all from this collection looks hardly played and offers superb sound quality. A couple or three one-off ticks, but little else – not bad for a 50-year-old very popular record. All elements of this are in age-defying condition and the owner, a lady now in her 70s bought this from new quickly after issue. For those wanting this landmark soundtrack album, a better very early UK copy could prove hard to find much better.

Brief Info: No long blurb needed for this soundtrack classic which just about all will know. A couple of years ago I purchased a collection of lovely Elvis and 1960s albums that included this. Just about all were in fantastic, hardly played condition. Clearly well-looked after, carefully stored and sparingly played – then with utmost care and all on a stereo record player. As this album is now celebrating it’s fiftieth year, I thought it fitting and appropriate to offer it, as one in much better all-round condition in lovely stereo could prove difficult to find. A couple or three one-off ticks apart, this beauty offers beautiful sound and has the most stunning production and audio quality. The true first deep-ridged Victor labels, playing surfaces, cover, book, and even the inner sleeve are in age-defying condition as my pictures show. My play-grade proved a real nostalgia trip for me as well. My mother bought a copy of this back in the day, and played almost into submission on an Alba stereogram – remember those? Just to hold one that really is this old, not a later repress or a modern ‘anniversary’ copy, gives that ultimate satisfaction of having the real thing – and this copy, you have exactly that.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and the merest whisker off Mint(–). A Beautiful vintage example. A single format with front Clarifoil laminate, this covers all the folds and ends on the back via the spine edge. The back surface is unprotected, matt with a smooth surface. Printed and made in England by James Upton Ltd. Includes the vintage Decca-style polylined inner sleeve and the original 8-page book.

Lamination & Front: A cover of the standard to really celebrate the true 50th-anniversary of this album that was bought back in the year of issue. The laminate retains superb shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting, peeling, any dulling is minimal, very gentle and faint as seen with more scrutiny under bright angled light – hardly any. A couple of tiny tip end creases and a couple of light half moon surface creases, even the edges have hardly any hairlines. The white exposed strip on the Clarifoil end on the right is clean and untoned or grubby. The famous graphic looks immaculate with rich deep colour. Quite frankly this age-defying cover looks a mere fraction of its true and genuine age.

Cover Back: Also very impressive with any age discolouration minimal and light – traces near the edges only, but as light as it almost gets. Little else to fault, any marks or blemishes are tiny, very few and faint, barely any hint of rim impression and certainly no ringwear or creasing worthy of mention. In terms of ageing, minimal and this complements the superb front perfectly.

Top Edge: A tiny minuscule rub trace near the centre, that apart little else to fault. Clarifoil covers often bow badly, this hasn’t and is still quite straight.

Bottom Edge: Minimal blemishing to the actual laminated fold. The card end has a little mild thickening which quite honestly is nigh-on impossible to avoid.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, still sharp and mostly very with barely any hint of wear. Any thickening or burring minuscule even as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: An exceptional spine: solid, straight with barely any compression, the ends pinched in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, this also near perfectly centred.

Corners: Any traces of tip rubbing tiny and very light. Minute tip creases to the bottom pair (some somewhat critical) and largely excellent (the top pair better) shape retained.

Cover Summary: A hugely impressive all-round example of this very famous mid-1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please man, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): and as close to Mint(–) as they ever get. A typical Decca polylined inner design of the era in lilttle short of immaculate condition. A little rim impression on the front left side, but with a heavy record inside for around 50 years, can that be a surprise as bare minimum? Two pristine window circles and the lining a clear as they ever get. No edge splits and hardly any real creasing or grubbiness. Very gentle seam adhesive darkening, and way less than average. This is UK Patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

The Book: MINT: no false modesty with this. The original 8-page book is immaculate and appears hardly even handled or removed from the cover. Both the original staples are pristine and as solid as when made and all pages unblemished or creased. This will prove near impossible to find better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): or better. A superb visual copy that is ultra clean with amazing fresh shine and qutie heavily pressed on high quality Decca vinyl. Decca pressed RCA records in the UK up to late 1968 and they were top-draw pressings at this time. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface trace marks bordering on minuscule and faint, even as seen critically under bright angled light. Fine grooves that can be easily damaged without due respect. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This landmark soundtrack album plays up to, and most all above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Yes, a couple or threeone-off clicks, but at 50 years of age, how many will ever play silent? Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is immensely high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A genuine hi-fi recording in beautiful stereo. Some critical areas, including delicate solo nuns singing voices (where the ticks were noted), the grooves here incredibly fine and delicate. Actually they sounded more like static ‘spikes’ than clicks, and I can seen no blemish visually for them. But there were present on three checks. There is so little else to fault on this magnificent recording anyway, and I consider blemishes like this beyond minor. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Julie Andrews vocals are simply sublime, as are all the singers including the children’s voices. All fully focused, precised, crisp and sharp, imagine how many were ruined by old heavyweight, thick stylus from the era. This almost takes you into the studio itself. It even includes a deep church organ that really got the bass drivers moving, that very difficult sound also pristine. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful copy. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and does nigh-on perfect justice to this famous soundtrack, more than deserving of strong recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
