THE STONE ROSES: 1989 DEBUT UK SILVERTONE 1st PRESS 1st EMBOSSED SLEEVE w/GLOSSY INNER, EXCELLENT+ AUDIO
THE STONE ROSES
The Stone Roses
ORIGINAL UK Silvertone (ORE LP 502) VERY FIRST PRESSING (April 1989) OF THE STONE ROSES' SEMINAL, EPONYMOUS DEBUT LP WHICH PLAYS BEAUTIFULLY THROUGHOUT (very rare to find a UK first pressing which sounds as good as this as they normally have excessive surface noise and/or clicking - but not this one which sounds SENSATIONAL throughout and I listened to the LP at a loud volume - which is the way I always play-grade my records before listing)
THE LP HAS THE FIRST ISSUE BLACK/RED SILVERTONE LABELS AND IS HOUSED IN THE VERY FIRST ISSUE, EMBOSSED SLEEVE WITH THE GOLD 'THE STONE ROSES' AND THE 3 YELLOW LEMONS RAISED ON THE FRONT OF THE COVER
THE SET COMES COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL GLOSSY INNER SLEEVE
A TREMENDOUS LP (consistently voted one of the best British albums ever made)
Matrix: ORE LP 502 A2 / ORE LP 502 B2 (as a very first April 1989 pressing this copy does not have the additional August 1989 '89-8' etching on each run-off which is present on copies issued that month in the non-embossed sleeve)
Since the Stone Roses were the nominal leaders of Britain's "Madchester" scene -- an indie rock phenomenon that fused guitar pop with drug-fueled rave and dance culture -- it's rather ironic that their eponymous debut only hints at dance music. What made the Stone Roses important was how they welcomed dance and pop together, treating them as if they were the same beast. Equally important was the Roses' cool, detached arrogance, which was personified by Ian Brown's nonchalant vocals. Brown's effortless malevolence is brought to life with songs that equal both his sentiments and his voice -- "I Wanna Be Adored," with it's creeping bassline and waves of cool guitar hooks, doesn't demand adoration, it just expects it. Similarly, Brown can claim "I Am the Resurrection" and lie back, as if there were no room for debate. But the key to The Stone Roses is John Squire's layers of simple, exceedingly catchy hooks and how the rhythm section of Reni and Mani always imply dance rhythms without overtly going into the disco. On "She Bangs the Drums" and "Elephant Stone," the hooks wind into the rhythm inseparably -- the '60s hooks and the rolling beats manage to convey the colourful, neo-psychedelic world of acid house. Squire's riffs are bright and catchy, recalling the British Invasion while suggesting the future with their phased, echoey effects. The Stone Roses was a two-fold revolution -- it brought dance music to an audience that was previously obsessed with droning guitars, while it revived the concept of classic pop songwriting, and the repercussions of its achievement could be heard throughout the '90s, even if the Stone Roses could never achieve this level of brilliance again.
Track Listing:
SIDE 1: I Wanna Be Adored / She Bangs The Drum / Waterfall / Don't Stop / Bye Bye Badman
SIDE 2: Elizabeth My Dear / (Song For My) Sugar Spun Sugar / Made Of Stone / Shoot You Down / This Is The One / I Am The Resurrection
LABELS: CLEAN and FRESH with NO unwanted marks/writing and just some light spindle traces
VINYL Visual: The vinyl surfaces still retain their DEEP, GLOSSY SHEEN with just some superficial hairlines mostly caused by movement of the record within its inner - these have NO real audio consequence - the playback is superb throughout
VINYL Audio: The audio is CRYSTAL CLEAR, VERY STRONG, RICH and VIBRANT. TREMENDOUS CUT. There are NO scratches, NO sticks/jumps, NO loud clicks/pops and barely any surface noise (really, hardly any). The album plays BEAUTIFULLY THROUGHOUT with SUPERB CLARITY, NO distortion and NO groove-wear and is graded EXCELLENT+ for audio - SOUNDS SENSATIONAL and very rare for this album to play so well as it is normally found with excessive surface noise/crackle - but this is one of the finest first pressings I have heard recently
SLEEVE: The EMBOSSED GLOSSY cover is in EXCELLENT to (+) condition with little edge wear or surface rubbing and a nice clean spine with all text SHARP and CLEAR. The top corner has a light crease but otherwise, a superb example of this first issue embossed sleeve
INNER SLEEVE: MINT - CLEAN and UNMARKED with NO splits to any of the edges or any signs of wear (the LP is now housed in new inner and will be posted in this to prevent any knifing damage to the original during transit)
