WÜRGEMALE (STRANGULATION MARKS) is a book of Stranglers lyrics with German translations containing original graphic art and comes with a 7“ single. Most of the edition are to be found in collections and museum archives all over the world. The Stranglers self owned one of the books. The book covers songs from their first LP „Rattus Norvegicus“ to their last record with Hugh Cornwell titled „10“. The edition consists of 77 numbered copies which are signed by all graphic artists who contributed to it and dates back to the year when The Stranglers publishes their first two records „Rattus Norvegicus“ and „No More Hereos“. This is a silkscreen printed book and almost A3 format. It was published in 1996 and contains 58 pages. The book's detailed table of contents lists details like the year of publication of the songs and the name of the single or LP which contained the respective song. All in all the book contains 41 Stranglers lyrics and their German poetic translations.
The 7“ record covers and labels are hand stamped (see photos). The accompanying single was published by TARWATER and contains cover versions of The Stranglers' song „Outside Tokyo“ and combined version of the two songs „Down In The Sewer“ and „Bear Cage“. Singer of this combined cover version was Sarah Marrs. Beside her activities as an artist, Sarah Marrs was singer of the Eat-Berlin underground formation Ornament & Verbrechen (Ornament & Crime) from 1990 to 1993.
The book's illustration are partly original graphic arts by MK Kähne, Sarah Marrs and Ronald Lippok. In the meantime, MK Kähne has become an artist in demand who exhibits and sells his elaborate travel objects at individual exhibitions in cities like Madrid, New York and Berlin.
Ronald Lippok was an active painter and graphic artist for the underground and Samisdat scene of East-Berlin in the 1980s. He was the drummer of the first East-Berlin punkband named Rosa Extra. Moreover, he and his brother Robert Lippok founded the famous underground band Ornament & Verbrechen. Today he is a member of the two bands TARWATER and TO ROCOCO ROT which are known in Europe and America.
Some of the translators were Henryk Gericke, Bernd Jestram, Rex Joswig, Andreas Koziol, Ronald Lippok, Sarah Marrs and Bert Papenfuß. Apart from Sarah Marrs these artists come from the literature and underground scene of East-Berlin area Prenzlauer Berg of the 1980s. Bernd Jestram and Ronald Lippok are the two members of TARWATER. Moreover, and Ronald Lippok is also the drummer of the band TO ROCOCO ROT. Both bands had their origins in the East-Berlin underground bands Aufruhr zur Liebe and Ornament & Verbrechen. Rex Joswig is the singer of the still exist East-Berlin underground band Herbst in Peking.
