Dr. John's Spin Factory returns with another alluring hunk of hot wax born in the early 1980s. Up for sale is a new old stock copy of the first US release of "Soul Mining," The The's second album. Who or what was The The? The The was the guise of, the 'muse' of, or perhaps something like the mask for Matt Johnson, a mercurial, reclusive, and soulful singer/songwriter whose music has run the gamut from new wave and post-punk to dance-pop and country. Emerging in 1979, Mr. Johnson (as The The) first found commercial success with the album now up for your consideration, "Soul Mining," which is no less than a skillful and sweet to the ear blend of alternative, synth pop laced with heady, socio-political themes. Oh yeah...I love this record! It was a disc I eagerly paid good money for in 1984. And when, many months later, I was browsing the bins of my local Boogie Records store in Kalamazoo and happened on a much lower priced 'cutout,' well, I had to make that one mine, too! (I'm of the opinion that there is likely no such thing as 'too much of a good thing.') The good news for you is, I never opened my second copy, the one with the hole (signifying it was a cutout), the one that currently sits here in the Spin Factory still fully shrink-wrapped and awaiting a new home.
