REVIEW FROMM ALLMUSIC:

• Of all the Mainstream titles, this is by far the best and gets the most listens on my system. Advertised as psychedelic and with a cover to match, it's not really. A more accurate description would be harmony driven power pop. If I had known that before purchasing, I might have stayed away. I would've missed out on a good album if I had done that. According to the Ugly Things fanzine, they were signed to Mainstream label by the infamous Bob Schad (sp?). He was also to produce the bands debut. In pretty quick order, he got them in the studio and according the story I read, over a weekend, the band began laying down backing tracks with guide vocals. Now, as the story goes, the band turned up on Monday to continue recording only to be told that the tapes had been sent off and it was done. Incredulous, they went back to playing local gigs in Cleveland and occassionally playing ski resorts in Vermont. When the album dropped and the band was given their copies, they were shocked and not happy with the result. So upset, as the article pointed out, they used their copies as frisbees. As Mainstream has become notorious for, they did'nt promote the album at all, leaving the band to fend for themselves. Something that they must have succeeded at some level, as they played some pretty big opening gigs for major acts in Detroit. Anyway, back to the story. In the article, the band members contacted insist that the vocals recorded were not meant to go on tape, they were guide vocals to be redone. If you have heard the album, you might find that as hard to believe as I do. Trying to recreate on stage their record proved extremely difficult as the harmony vocals were almost impossible to pull off in a live setting and with Mainstream fading into their recent past, the band became disillusioned. Soon, they decided to go into a more mainstream direction and changed the band name to Tank. Tank amounted to nothing and the story of the Tiffany Shade ended. As for the actual record, the band never received a penny for the album and after the release, were never contacted by Mainstream again. If you know anything about Mainstreams practices (and Bob Schads ((sp?)) practices, which is a common name in all the Mainstream band fiascos) in the late 60's with their exploito contracts and shoddy treatment of artists then you won't be surprised (if not, check out the stories on Big Brother and The Holding Company debut lp, The Amboy Dukes debut or any other 60's Mainstream rock artist)
  
  As for the lp itself, it's a really enjoyable listen. Nothing challenging or pushing the envelope about it but it is very well done and highly indicative that there was a bit of talent in the Tiffany Shade. Most of the tracks are self penned and fall into a hard, guitar driven, pop-rock sound. The opening track, 'Would You Take My Mind Out For A Walk' is psychedelic only in its lyrics but the harmony vocals are breath taking and guarantee to attract almost any listener. It's also the best track. Other highlights include 'Sam' with it's funk groove, quirky lyrics and them damn nice backing vocals. The rest follow in this vein without a duff track among the set. Good stuff, fun listen and recommended.
