TUBBY HAYES QUINTET: LATE SPOT AT SCOTT’S

A genuinely superb 1st pressing copy of this massively rare Modern British jazz LP. Released in 1963 in a limited edition run this LP sank without a trace. It has recently, however, been gaining a growing reputation as containing some of the finest recordings of Tubby’s career and, as such, has become a holy grail for Modern British Jazz and Tubby Hayes aficionados alike. These so rarely turn up for sale and when they do they are often battered and bruised. Not this one! The sleeve is in fantastic condition while the record is both visually and audibly in Near Mint condition (see below for a more full grading).

GRADING

SLEEVE: EX+

Sleeve is in genuinely superb condition. The unlaminated backpiece which is so often stained and discoloured is a bright reflective white with no foxing or browning. The front of the sleeve is similarly fantastic with only some very light feathering at the aperture and two small and innocuous factory produced laminate wrinkles. The spine is perfect with no discolouration and no flattening it stands robust and true with no breaks or wrinkles. It is genuinely so rare to come across a copy of this sleeve in any condition but to find a copy in such magnificent condition is basically unheard of.

RECORD: NM

The record is in as new condition. I very rarely rate records as NM but this LP is truly magnificent. There are no scuffs or scratches at all. The record retains its deep obsidian lustre. The deep textured 1st Edition Fontana labels show a single spider mark congruent with my belief that the record could not have been played more than a couple of times. When play tested on high end equipment the record sounds utterly perfect with no evidence of any hidden damage. There is no crackling and no pops or distortion of any kind. This is truly a remarkable copy of a remarkable recording.

MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint. 
EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing. 
VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
