The smooth, commercial, at times almost bubblegummy sound of the Turtles’ biggest hits – “Happy Together”, “She’d Rather Be With Me”, “Elenore”, and “You Showed Me” – might make Frank Zappa’s choice of the two leading members (Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan) to join the Mothers of Invention seem incongruous. A listen to this album, however, will go far towards clearing up the confusion. True, some of the tracks are quite conventional, such as the title cut (a triumph of sunshine pop by Steve Barri and P. F. Sloan); “I Know That You’ll Be There” (also by Barri-Sloan) and “Just a Room”, which have a sound reminiscent of what the Beach Boys were doing at that point; and “Give Love a Trial”, co-written by bassist Chuck Portz, a winsome, Sonny & Cher-like folky waltz. At the other extreme are several tracks that are rather advanced for their time (the LP was recorded Dec. 1965 - Jan. 1966). One of these is Kaylan’s “House of Pain”, a gritty “House of the Rising Sun”-type tale of a wasted life; it’s pretty dated, but includes a reference to “holes in my arm”, which is not something many pop groups were singing about at the time. Another is “Down in Suburbia”, an anti-conformity song that has a hint of the Fugs’ gleeful naughtiness (starting with the first line, “All they ever smoke is tobacco in suburbia”), but was written by none other than Bob Lind of “Elusive Butterfly” fame. In between are several garage-rock tracks (“Flyin’ High”, written by guitarist Al Nichol, and two by Kaylan – “Pall Bearing, Ball Bearing World”, a rather clunky social-commentary song, and the uptempo “Almost There”), and a couple of evocative folk-rock songs – the minor-keyed “I Need Someone”, written by Portz and rhythm guitarist Jim Tucker, and “All My Problems”, written by Dwight Tunji (credited with “special effects & percussion” in the liner notes), an adaptation of the folk song “All My Trials” which is given a really very effective, atmospheric treatment. And finally there’s “Let Me Be”, which was also on the group’s debut LP (it became a minor hit late in 1965), and is a classic example of P. F. Sloan’s over-the-top imitation Dylan; it really sounds almost like a parody.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) Stereo pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies by a ratio of at least 3:1.
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2 (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) .
- Visible shelf wear noted on the bottom seam
- Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine
- Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
