Description
On offer is a 1970 LP by THE UNION FOLK called A BASKETFUL OF OYSTERS on TRADITION, catalogue number TSR 002.
This is the first LP by the Cheshire-based folk group active in the early seventies. Individually, they were BOB MARTIN (guitar), EDGAR THOMPSON (bass), KEN GREENHOUGH (guitar), and MARTIN DUTTON (fiddler). A Mudcat thread from 2004, initiated by someone anxious to track a copy of this very album, suggests that BOB SIDDALL joined for the second album, and a North Manchester man called Frank O’Reilly used to sing with them. “Frank always had problems in starting a song in the same key to everyone else. Ken was a wizard at coping with this.”
This copy is an original first pressing from 1970 (there wasn’t a later issue) and is an early release from Tradition, the micro-folk label based in Macclesfield(note the low catalogue number).
The vinyl is in NEAR MINT condition with no scratches, no scuffmarks, no pops, no sticking and no background noise. The laminate cover is in pristine condition, with straight edges and sharp spine and absolutely no grubbiness and no writing. There is no writing or spindle marks on the textured labels. The record is housed in the original poly-lined inner sleeve.

The album comes from the collection of the late Ian Chappell, director of the Hampshire-based South Eastern Museums Service. A devoted collector of folk music, Chappell would obsessively buy multiple copies of the same record in search of vinyl perfection. They were acquired by the seller at auction from Omega Auctions of Stockport in June 2012.
