Truly electronic rock groups were a rarity back in the late '60s when guitars held sway in psychedelia. The United States of America made good use of electronics, keyboards, ring modulated violin, oscillators, etc., as well as electronic vocal processing, both live and in the studio. The band had a very short-lived career, 1967-1968 and that was it. Vocally fronted by female singer Dorothy Moskowitz, there was really noting like them at the time, except for the U.K.'s White Noise, who's "An Electric Storm" came a year later...and then there were the Silver Apples, but that was almost something completely different. If the Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead could be consider "Acid Rock," the USA was DMT Rock. Joe Byrd, who led this outfit already had avant garde music cred, and would continue to put out records after the inevitable break-up of this volatile band, but noting nearly as intense as The United States of America.
This was an extremely influential record for me personally (I covered the USA's "Garden of Earthly Delights" on my Serious Black 'Barbican' CD from 2002, but the original is way better) and this is my original 1968 first pressing copy that I purchased right after hearing one of their songs on a progressive radio station in '68. I played this album A LOT. Consequently, the vinyl is pretty used. It looks VG- or Good+, but sounds a little better, so I'm grading it a VG. After a complete play-test it played all the way through without skinning or repeating, but there was a fair amount of surface noise, most noticeably on the quieter sections, and occasional ticks. Kind of like an average old record, not bad but not great. The cover is about the same, having splits on three sides (with some taped), so if you're looking for a quality copy, keep looking. Spend the big money and go for the gusto. Because of the record's sentimental value I'm not likely to come down in price...original copies are still a rarity.
