THE VALIANTS – SHE WAS A HIGH, HIGH FLYER / THRESHOLD OF LOVE (DEMANICK 101) (EX-)

Most Likely from the Los Angeles, CA area, this is a seriously rare 45, recorded for an obscure studio in Inglewood, CA (Demanick Records).  This incredibly raw organ-dominated garage single sounds like a couple of kids in their, well… um… garage!  She Was a High, High Flyer starts off with a reverb crash in an amp followed by a soft whisper… “Hey boy, there she goes” and then lopes into a classic amateur garage song that sounds like the bass player might have just learned how to play a day or two earlier!  Note, this song is only bass, drums, organ and vocals.   This side is credited to Ed. Corti.  The flip side, Threshold of Love, features the same no-guitar arrangement, but is quite a bit more fast-paced.  The singer seems like he’s trying a little too hard on this one to do a blue-eyed soul kind of vocal delivery, and the bass player still seems like he’s got a deer in the headlights approach to his instrument.  I say all of this with endearing intentions, because after all, without folks like this, we wouldn’t have an entire genre that’s still thriving after fifty years.  This side is credited to V. Guerrero and B. Avila.  Demanick Records adds even more mystery to the mix since the only other three documented records on this label are all associated with Italian opera music! This was an odd one on Discogs… There was already an entry and a few wants, but zero people actually had this record. This copy grades visually as EX but has some audible surface noise so I would say it plays VG++.  Check out the scans and audio samples.

GRADING SCALE:

NM/M: Played once or twice. No visible surface or playback wear.

EX: Has been played but has no scratches, minimal to no wear and plays without surface noise.

EX- Plays without surface noise, but might have a few visible minor scratches.

VG++: May have a few surface scratches or a little wear, but plays nicely with only minimal surface noise and clicks. No Skips

VG+: "Typical used record".  A little wear, a few minor (light) scratches, but plays well. Surface noise may be more present during soft passages. No Skips

VG: More wear and significant surface noise. Deeper scratches. May have a skip and will be noted.

G: Significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear. (Beat up record!) May have skips if noted.
