Label/Format: Island – rare original pink eyeball with rough textured surfaces and deep inner ridge.

Label Conditions: Both have a beautiful real pink colour and even though there are a few small marks each side (side one 2, side two 5) clearly seen on my scans, they do little to spoil these very rare labels. A very small scuff on the rim on side two is also visible. Spindle evidence is modest, in fact very few at all on side one. These heavy textured original Island labels are tough and were not easily marked, although this record has been played several times with the actual playing surfaces showing some marks, which are mostly surface and non-sounding, the labels offer scant evidence and both look impressive given all the facts.

Cat Number: ILPS 9099.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 162 grams. A very impressive weight for this, or any album.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: The first format pink pressings as per this are rare, make no mistake. The very first off the line sold in very small numbers and few would have been made and only bought by a very few adventurous listeners, few would have shelled out for a new name and a highly experimental album like this back in 1969. Never easy to find in decent condition either. The cover was very flimsy and light and looked made on a budget and few survive in decent conditions. The earliest examples were made by Ernest J. Day, later ones that looks very similar by Robor. This copy has marks but still offers very impressive sound with little unwanted. A complex recording often shattered by old mono record players, hence sound is often ruined.

Brief Info: Without doubt one of the most advanced, daring and totally unique albums ever made. So far ahead in terms of technology and content, this very rare Island album still sounds advanced even today – some 42 years after issue. This is not a typical Island record: a label well known for progressive music but this album went far beyond ‘progressive’. For the curious who bought this one around issue time, well they must have wondered what they had let themselves in for. Music at this time consisted mostly of pop and blues-based rock, the beginning of the guitar-keyboard progressive era. The White Noise were a little different to say the least: experimental electronic mayhem, full-throttle stereo pyrotechnics with use of sounds, as the cover states: that have never been heard before by humans. This record blends vocals, instrumentalists and complex electronic sound into a collage of entertainment. Some gentle moments too but some truly mind-warping mayhem that leave the senses reeling. At times tripping into the avant garde arena. Side one includes very convincing orgasmic sounds juxaposing between speakers, very ahead of its time – this must have caused many a raised eyebrow for the unsuspecting listener way back. The title song lives up to its name with manic electronic screamed vocals and intensive percussion that will make the hair on the neck stand up – truly scary stuff, this is not a record for the faint hearted or regular pop music fan. Also female weeping sounds are used which are truly unnerving with an unsettling effect to the senses. This is real groundbreaking experimentalism you would probably associated with the German progressive acts of the time. So who were the White Noise? Well put simply, they featured members of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, the people brought very much to the attention of Britain in the 60s and beyond with the theme music for ‘Dr Who’ – quite possibly the most famous and best TV theme ever – a classic piece that still sounds as brilliant now as it did then. They specialised in sound effects for television and radio themes. This a massively difficult record just to find on the original pink label, this being far too ‘out there’ for most people’s tastes. This vintage record is a roller-coaster ride of quiet passages and extreme sound. If this was played on less than worthy equipment or treated with less than due respect – and many would have been – this complex record would have been written-off very quickly. Even today’s modern equipment get a full workout from this record and to enjoy this one to maximum effect, play as loudly as possible or on a pair of quality speakers or headphones. Few copies will ever play perfectly with heavy crackle and distortion being rife on so many. Even the pink rim copies suffer just as badly and the cover is just as difficult. This copy has a few surface marks but most-all are ignored and apart from a little brief and gentle surface sound on the odd quiet passage or two, it plays very strongly and well with little unwanted. The odd sporadic clicks is nigh-on impossible to avoid of this complex record, but the main factor is the lack of distortion or groovewear. Visually, a little down on what I normally offer, but this is so elusive and rare and a hugely important record within the early Island catalogue, and overall, still an impressive copy. Not for the visual or sound perfectionist, but many, if not most collectors will enjoy owning it.

Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very high indeed, quite possibly the most difficult Island cover ever made. For me this falls below the usual very high Ernest J. Day standard being thin and flimsy, it even has an almost ‘budget’ look and feel to it. Possibly deliberately so as this had no commercial potential at all with sales expected to be low. A black and white cover with a smooth finish, a thick heavy record inside, this has little hope of even surviving in decent condition, even a Very Good one being ‘respectable’.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD(++): more than justified on one of rock’s most uncompromising sleeves. A single format with no laminate protection, matt finished and smooth. This was printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd. Beware of Robor substitutions.

Cover Front: Even with a few light creases, some mild rubbing and very slight ringwear, this is still one of the better EJD original covers I have seen for this album – not that I have seen too many – first pressings of this record are rare. Some edgewear encroaches into view as well, but in terms of this uncompromising sleeve, a pretty good one.

Cover Back: This is practically the same, under light, a round circle mark is seen from what I presume was an old price sticker. This has removed NO ink and with normal visibility, is nigh-on invisible.

Top Edge: Light, patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edge: Light patchy rubbing, more near the corners.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and quite sharp with barely any real wear. Totally unfeathered and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A thin and fragile spine, hence, like most found, this has worn. The area that seldom escapes. This has moderate patchy rubbing with around 70 per cent of the text eroded. The catalogue number is fully present and unworn but the rest is very patchy. If this unforgiving cover had avoided spine rubbing, it would have been graded considerably higher, but alas, few EJD’s ever do.

Corners: All corners have rubbed but do retain fine shape.

Cover Summary: Everything about this cover has to be taken into perspective and one grading at a very respectable Very Good is a fine example. When most are found falling apart and with ugly deeply penetrating ringwear and rubbing, or even held together with cellotape this is an example not to be dismissed lightly. Even the later pink rims covers made by Robor are fairly delicate, but certainly tougher and more resiliant than this flimsy effort. This basic, but still quite attractive item should please many collectors but those who want a ‘perfect’ one may have to wait forever. The record when purchased was inside a heavy-duty polylined inner, it has a code of 3/68. This in superb condition, original or not, not sure, but it’s included.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD(+) / EXCELLENT(-): very clean, with fine shine, deep, intense black and very heavily pressed. This is a real heavyweight record pressed on thick, deep grooved vinyl. Complex groove patterns indicate real hi-fi sounds embedded within. A real minefield for any stylus to tackle, no wonder so many early copies are in shocking conditions. Although there are surface marks, mostly on side one, this record plays very well indeed and these are practically all superficial. Being so thick and heavy, this is a tough record and it withstood the usage it received all those years ago. These marks, which are mainly light anyway, are non-penetrating can cannot be felt or heard. I have seen others that appeared less marked that sounded far inferior to this highly enjoyable audio copy. So again, not for the visual purist, but for those wanting a first issue that plays well, this could be just the one for you.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This astonishing record plays above it’s visual grading with little to fault. Very strong, distortion-free sound – a very important factor on this one – all frequencies are sharp and clear and this can never be taken for granted on this high intensity recording. Sound quality is at times breathtaking with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This sounds like no other record I have ever heard before, a totally unique album. Any surface sounds are minimal, some mild gentle traces on some of the quiet passages but this is one of the better pressed examples I have heard and little registered. Few of these will ever play without some blemishes, I think it’s near impossible especially in the earliest made. I can never imagine any copy of this playing silent but this record gives a great account of itself overall with practically nothing offending my (quite sensitive) [or so I’m told] ears. The music may frighten some off I hasten to add quickly, this is certainly way out stuff and ‘Mojo’ magazine again included this title in its poll of ‘Most Out There’ albums of all time in March 2005. At times mildly extreme and certainly ‘challenging’ but some ‘mellow’ moments too. The title song is a mindblowing finale that leaves the senses numb. Awesome percussion with electronic mayhem, screams and stereo pyrotechnics – this is high intensity entertainment and the quaity of the production and engineering must be mentioned again. This groundbreaking finale plays superbly as does most of this pioneering piece of rock experimentalism. The odd spiradic pop or click is present but any surface sounds, brief and quite gentle, a tough record that has survived well for sound. Few copies will outperform this original pink example significantly I feel sure – most will fall below and just finding the early copies will be difficult enough. Unless near silence is demanded, this should please most collectors. Time will take its toll of this intolerant cover and complex recording (if abused too much by thick, heavy stylii). Little, if anything spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. I state again, this does have marks and a few relatively minor sound blemishes but light enough for me to mostly ignore as the astounding sounds took over – this is vinyl remember – a few imperfections are almost impossible to avoid on the old and difficult titles. Just enough to remind what you are actually listening too – a 42-year-old record, not a cold and clinical digital download. This rare copy will prove challenging to find significantly better in real terms and I know for certain, it will take a very special copy to better it significantly. It’s a copy I am happy to strongly recommend but not perfectionist standard as my gradings suggest. I really love this album - one of Island ‘lost’ treasures.

All the pictures I use for your guidance are taken with a digital camera or scanned - they are NOT improved, cleaned-up or made better looking than they are with camera trickery or enhancing with digital programmes. What you see is what you get and scanned labels will give a more accurate representation of the genuine colour than flash photography where light is variable. I cannot guarantee total accuracy for colours however but most will be very close. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
