Contains Eight 7" 45 RPM double-sided Vinyl Singles in Mono (16 Tracks) & Contains 8 Page Color Booklet.

Eight 7" singles from the start of the band's career pressed on heavyweight vinyl with paper sleeves (reproducing the period graphics front and back with die-cut center holes). Includes `I Can't Explain', `Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere', `My Generation' as well as unreleased single `Circles' backed with `Instant Party Mixture'. Housed in a rigid `lid-and-tray' outer box, full color and matte lamination. 7" sized 8-page color booklet with liner notes by Who biographer Mark Blake.
All the singles in this box set were remastered in mono by Jon Astley at Close to the Edge from te original mixes - apart from 'Instant Party Mixture' as there were no original mono of this. It was a planned release that got dropped. However, from the original three-track recording, Bob Pridden and Richard Whittaker at FX created a mono mix of it specially for this collection that Jon then mastered for vinyl. All 16 tracks in this set were mastered at half-speed with Miles Showell at Abbey Road in the way that the early Motown records were cut. Using half-speed gives a better finish because the cutting head is moving about more slowly so it has more time to give a more detailed, and less distorted record with a much smoother top-end.
" The Who charged out of West London in the mid-sixties on a mission of music and mayhem that has clocked up over a half-century of at times brilliant music. First and foremost, though, it was as a singles band that they made their big breakthrough. The first single released under The Who name was 'I Can't Explain', clearly in influential thrall to The Kinks block-chord sound, but with an added appeal by way of Pete Townshend's revealingly insecure lyricism. It sounds great here, on a slab of heavy-duty seven-inch vinyl single, neatly reproduced in a generic Brunswick Records bag. The next single, 'Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere' (a rare Townshend / Roger Daltrey co-write) showed The Who in a more original light, with Keith Moon's clattering drums and Townshend's mores-code feedback screeching. Still sounds fresh and invigorating. 'My Generation' was epoch al though, featuring - shock horror - a John Entwistle bass guitar solo and a pilled-up stuttering vocal from Daltrey. The other singles that came out on Brunswick soon resulted on a legal case between the band's management - Chris Stamp and Kit Lambert - and producer Shel Talmy, and were tracks pulled from their debut album, and are not essential singles , but worth having. Also, a nice bonus is their High Numbers single, 'I'm The Face' / 'Zoot Suit', originally released on Fontana. Excellent set, maybe for the diehard Who collector, but I love this, and the Reaction and Track Records singles sets, too. Essential slices of Brit Rock history, sixties-style."
