Description

This is the original UK LP by THE WHO, The WHO, Live At Leeds, 16th May 1970 Stereo Original Pressing on the white TRACK label 2406 001. This is the original Pressing with the RED TRACK TEXT stamped on the front. Included is the original UK 1st issue 'WOODSTOCK' contract and all the other inserts.

The original 1970 UK 1st issue Macneill Press mock bootleg gatefold cover with red text is in EX- condition (adress written on the sleeve ~ see picture). The record is in EX+ condition.

After releasing 'Tommy' in Mid- 1969 The Who went on a extended world tour to promote it, and returned to England at the end of the year with a desire to relase a live album from the tour. However, the band balked at the prospect of listening to about 80 hours of recordings they had made to decide which would make the best album. It was rumoured that the original tapes shortly after were burnt to prvent bootlegging. So two shows were scheduled, one at the university of Leeds and one at Hull university, for the expressed purpose of recording and releasing a live album. The two shows were performed on the 14th and 15th Febuary 1970 at Leeds and Hull repsectively. The Hull live recording was intially preferred as the recording they would choose as they belied the acoutics projexted better in a more spacious venue. However getting the recording tapes back after the two shows, they found that the bass guitar was not recorded on some of the songs at the Hull show, so the Leeds show recording was chosen as the one to release as a live album.

Live at Leeds is The Who's first live album, and is the only live album that was released while the group were still recording and performing regularly. Initially released in the United States on 16 May 1970, by Decca and MCA and the United Kingdom on 23 May 1970, by Track and Polydor, the album has been reissued on several occasions and in several different formats. As of 2005, the album is ranked number 170 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
It is often cited as the best live rock album of all time and is included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. It is also included in Q magazine's list of Loudest Albums of All Time.
