Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces tiny, very few and faint. These have the slightly light ink colour, very first issues had darker text.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 121 grams. A more typical still solid weight for this copy.

Rarity & What’s Included: Complete examples with the early format inserts are quite difficult to find. So many have the poster missing and often the inserts become torn and creased.

Original Year of Release: May 1970

Matrix Nos: 2406001 A // 1 1 ? 1 2 & 2406001 B // 1 1 1 1 6 (not a first, but still early).

Musicians: Roger Daltrey – lead vocals, harmonica, tambourine; Pete Townshend – guitar, vocals; John Entwistle – bass guitar, vocals; Keith Moon – drums.

Brief Info: Regarded by many as the perfect and best live album ever. Loud and raw, no fancy production, overdubs or cover – this was all intentional – this set looks like a bootleg and was supposed to sound like one too – even the tape imperfections and crackle is left in – but it does have WAY better sound than most boots. The labels clearly state, it has ‘crackling noises’, which is all intentional just to make this even less ‘dressed up’. What you do get is The Who doing what they do best – entertain – and this classic live set is just pure energy and excitement. This record is in super condition, the cover a little aged by discolouration that few seem to avoid, and all inserts are included in their early formats. These do differ, some with subtle differences, some significant. Below I state what the main differences between first printings of the inserts compared to quite later versions. To save anyone emailing me, no I do not have the ultra rare tracing paper wallet, so far, one of these has eluded me.

THE INSERTS – most here I believe to be the original formats unless stated otherwise:

The Poster: MINT(–): Unmounted, untorn or split, clean, uncreased (bar the original two manufactured folds of course), all edges sharp and foldlines unstressed as new. The most elusive of the inserts as this was often mounted on walls, this is one of best original posters I have ever seen. Even the back is as new, untoned or marked. Just the odd tiny corner crinkle trace stops a full Mint grading

Differences: This is less white than later made examples, it has a slightly more ‘aged’ look which is more than obvious when put aside a later version where the white is very white indeed.

Delivery Note: PRACTICALLY MINT: nothing of note worthy of mention.

Differences: This had dark print and less white paper. Later versions had paler text, again very apparent when put side by side.

Notice: PRACTICALLY MINT: ultra clean and fresh, the merest hint of a corner semi-crease, this going beyond critical.

Differences: Originals are very slightly darker, quite neglible.

Photo of the Band: EXCELLENT(++), the odd faint surface trace mark seen under light.

Differences: Originals on much thicker paper than later versions. This one a little darker than the very first-made ones with a fraction less detail in places.

‘My Generation’ Lyrics: EXCELLENT(++): One small corner crease.

Differences: Darker off-white, quite thin paper.

Jee Club Wardour Street: EXCELLENT(+): this one has the manufactured punched holes. Some small corner and minor edge creasing, little else.

Differences: Original has thinner paper and deep blue writing. Later ones were all black and whiter paper.

High Numbers Earnings Sheet: EXCELLENT(+): one of the most delicate inserts in this set. It has a single fold which I am certain was made in manufacture. Two smallish corner creases, little else.

Differences: Only originals are on yellow and ultra thin tracing type paper. Later examples were on much thicker paper which was also white. This is a deep yellow even though my camera flash may have lightened it up on my picture(s).

Premier Talent Sheet: EXCELLENT(++) again, like the earnings sheet, made on yellow ultra thin tracing type paper. Almost perfect bar a very light bottom right corner crease. Given just frail this is, it’s in remarkable condition. Crisp, fresh and sharp.

Differences: The same as the Earnings Sheet, also the reddish-brown text and logo are a deeper colour.

King’s Agency: MINT: again in stunning condition with practically nothing to fault, this has the two manufactured punch holes.

Differences: Originals on thinner paper and the Barry Perkins signature is a quite deep blue, these look more like a real signature. Later ones have a bright blue or black signature and look more ‘printed’. Here the sig looks more written in real pen.

EMI Records Sheet: EXCELLENT: this being critical, a soft crease on the bottom edge.

Differences: Originals are printed on off-white paper, later examples are pure white.

New Action Ltd: MINT(–): One manufacturer fold which is quite normal. One tiny corner tip semi-crease.

Differences: New Acton logo in paler blue. Later ones much darker.

Overhead Guitar Picture: PRACTICALLY MINT: nothing to fault, one manufactured central fold and both sides are matt finished.

Differences: Originals have both sides matt and printed on very finely textured paper. Later examples are more glossy. All these differences are fact using my own eyes from two very different copies, one very early, as this one on offer and a later example from around 1972. These inserts all appear very early originals, possibly with the exception of the band picture which is slightly lacking the very fine detail I have seen before.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: Flimsy, delicate, easily damaged and torn. Also this rustic paper tends to age with discolouration as this one has a little.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: and covers hardly get much more basic. A very flimsy gatefold with inside single stapled (on each face) for the retaining ‘pouch’. Unlaminated with the more elusive deep blue ink on the front that looks hand-stamped, also blue inside as seen in close-up. These also vary immensely with some being more filled in and clearer. Even the position changes from cover to cover. This was supposed to look ‘hand-stamped’ and probably was, the ultimate bootleg lookalike. Made with very wear-prone soft matt brown card that always wears very badly. It was printed and made by MacNeill Press. This cover was deliberately made to basic, even ‘home-made’ to resemble a bootleg any ageing or marks almost improves this cover giving the format more character and making the spoof more complete.

Cover Front: Some discolour and mildish grubbiness to make it appear more aged. Some edge scuffing and burring but minimal creasing. The spine edge has darkened most. A staple is seen on the right edge, this solid and untarnished. The important deep blue stamp looks superb with some paler areas for that real effect.

Cover Back: Not the most exciting of backs but quite deliberate of course, simply made to represent a plain piece of brown card and folded in a home-made kind of way. More consistently and lightly darkened or aged with a mildish trace of rim darkening. The right edge toned but overall neat with only modest grubbinessl. Again the second staple is solid and clean.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is solid and neat with just a small nick out of the top central fold. Discolouration inside is more modest. Both storage pouches are solid and tidy with just a crease to the right of the fold. No tears and both staples unloosened.

Top Edges: Single thickness only with soft card means some burring and thickening, even tearing seldom avoided. Both show far less wear than some I have seen and these have have thickened little.

Bottom Edges: These are both double thickness to retain the record and inserts. Any rubbing or ‘wooliness’ very light. I have seen these literally rubbed right though, this is light years away from that and both edges look neat with no splits or repairs.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Four edges here, two full height and two just under half height. Again solid and neat with little burring or even thickening. All edges are guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: This never had text printed on it. This is usually the area that get most wear due to be being flimsy and often exposed in racks. A little light rubbing and the odd scuff trace, all quite light considering. This edge has darkned the most, again due to more potential exposure.

Corners: Some tip creasing and mildish rubbing but all quite neat overall largely with very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A unique and very fragile, very basic cover, all deliterate of course. Deep blue ink inside and outside, these are difficult to find and there is no faking the matrixes on the record and date code on the inner sleeve which all emphasises the early manufacture of this copy. It is not for the perfectionist, but a cover that can withstand ageing and wear better than most simply because it is so minimalistic. Ageing I feel actually enhances these early examples and this a very respectable example that many will be happy with.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the original record inner sleeve is also included and this in it’s own way important as it has the 0770 (July 1970) date code on the bottom right (as seen in close-up). So this copy, from a private collection, is early. This has some discolouration, mainly to the edges and a little edge creasing. But the lining is solidly intact and ultra clear with minimal crinkle as seen through two pristine window circles. No edges splits or repairs, quite impressive overall with just enough to remind of it’s considerable age.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and this is very clean and looks hardly even played. This is a record that often got heavily used and few of the earlier pressings are seen devoid of marks and scratches. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. All that raw power is superbly preserved in totally unworn grooves. Okay, the cover has more, but the record is exceptional and will prove difficult to find much better. One many, if not most collectors will enjoy.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely record plays up to it’s high visual grading and beyond with hardly anything to fault. Strong, powerful sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is raw and exciting with a dynamic sound and punchy sonic delivery. Any real surface sounds barely even registered, but as the labels state (my label picture will confirm) some mastertape crackling is present and was decided to let it stay. Many consider this to be the greatest live album ever and for this listener, it is certainly a contender. I detected no pops or clicks and this is a top-drawer clean pressing as you hope for being so early produced. This is not hi-fi masterpiece, it was never meant to be, but the sound and production was designed to be basic, like the cover, to give that bootleg effect and the sense of actually being there. Few copies will even match, let lone outperform this impressive record I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this awesome live set – with a sound just so perfect for it’s aims and the legendary status as one of the best live albums ever is even more justified. This actual record and contents (the cover a little less so) could prove near difficult to find significantly better and merits my strong recommendation. Remember the blue cover is harder to find than the red and even being aged with some wear, gives that more satisfying pleasure. And finally regarding the inserts, few complete ones will rarely fail to have some edge creasing at least, the nature of the cover means they can move and get trapped in the gatefold. In real terms again, these have very little to fault.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
