This album is by The Who, an English rock band formedin London in 1962. They are considered one of the most influential rockbands of the 20th century and have sold over 100 million recordsworldwide. The Who evolved from an earlier group, the Detours, and establishedthemselves as part of the pop art and mod movements, featuring autodestructive art by destroying guitars and drums on stage. Their firstsingle as the Who, I Can’t Explain (1965), reached the UK top ten, and wasfollowed by a string of hit. In 1967, they performed at the Monterey PopFestival and released I Can See For Miles, their only US top-ten single. Thegroup's 1969 concept album Tommy is considered ground breaking and was acritical and commercial success.
MeatyBeaty Big and Bouncy is a compilation album of the band’s singles andwas released in 1971 on Track Records, in the UK and on Decca in the US. Itentered the US Billboard 200 chart on 20 November 1971, peaking at number11, and the UK chart on 3 December 1971, peaking at number 9. The album wascompiled by Pete Townshend and is named after the members of the band:"Meaty" is Daltrey, who was quite fit at the time; "Beaty"is Moon, for his drumming; "Big" is Entwistle, who was a largeperson, often referred to as "The Ox" and "Bouncy" wasTownshend, who jumped about quite acrobatically during performances. Thealbum's original title was The Who Looks Back. Most of the tracks on thisalbum would also appear on many subsequent compilations of Who material.
