An exceptional 1st pressing of QUADROPHENIA, in SUPERB condition, with Rare Labels, 1st press cover and outstanding TOP AUDIO from start to finish!
Quadrophenia is the sixth studio album by The Who. Released on 19 October 1973 by Track and Polydor in the United Kingdom, and Track and MCA in the United States, Quadrophenia is a double album, and the group's second rock opera. Its story involves social, musical and psychological happenings from an English teenage perspective, set in London and Brighton in 1964 and '65.
Quadrophenia reached #2 on the US Billboard album chart (kept from #1 by then label mate Elton John with his Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album) and was the highest position of any Who album in the US as they would never hit #1 on the US album chart. Pete Townshend now looks back on the album with great praise. "The music is the best music that I've ever written, I think, and it's the best album that I will ever write".
During the album production Townshend made many field recordings with a portable reel-to-reel recorder. Some of the location sounds that made it to the record were waves washing on the beach and a train whistle. The ending of "The Dirty Jobs" also includes a musical excerpt from The Thunderer, a march by John Philip Sousa. Townshend recorded this while listening to a brass band perform at a park.
Quadrophenia was originally released as a two-LP set with a gatefold jacket and a thick booklet containing lyrics, a text version of the story, and photographs illustrating the tale. MCA Records re-released it as a two-CD set in 1985 with the lyrics and text story line on a thin fold-up sheet but none of the photographs. The original Polydor CD issue included the complete booklet in miniature, as did the re-mastered MCA and Polydor CD reissues of 1996.
Quadrophenia was originally released in the U.K. as Track 2406-110/111 on 26 October 1973. However, it appears that owing to a vinyl shortage caused by the OPEC oil embargo, only a limited number of copies got to stores before production had to be halted. Most British Who fans failed to find a copy until after The Who's U.K. tour. In the U.K., Quadrophenia reached the #2 position, being held out of the top spot by David Bowie's Pin Ups, which ironically contained cover versions of The Who songs "I Can't Explain" and "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere".
Quadrophenia remains a masterpiece by the band, with 1st pressings becoming increasingly rare, and 1st pressings with TOP AUDIO impossible to find.
This rare UK TRACK pressing gives an unbeatable early press listening experience of this classic album.
ALBUM PLAYED FOR GRADING:
QUADROPHENIA is a complex and varied collection of music, and even the 1st pressings are relatively sensitive pieces of vinyl and hard to find in clear audio condition. Worn copies can have a lot of surface sound even on musically complex and busy tracks like 'THE PUNK AND THE GODFATHER.' This incredible pressing has strong undistorted audio with super clear sound, it really sounds unplayed, it is so clear. There is certainly no obvious interference, and NO loud pops, clicks or distortion. It sounds great and plays with great separation and clarity! It has to be one of the best pressings I've ever heard, as clean as vinyl can get, with largely crystal clear audio!
This great record plays up to the visual and audio grading and beyond. Superb sound, every track has been tested and I could find no obvious sound blemishes. Some barely detectable occasional static only, and it is very light and very occasional, the kind that is found on every vinyl, even brand new pieces. Wonderful TOP audio, there is NO distortion, NO sticks or jumps what so ever, and virtual silence between the tracks. Great music with great clarity, and so hard to find with this type of sound. I will give a detailed account below:
Smoothing in with the famous long rainy intro of 'I am the Sea', the sound is incredible. Crystal clear with virtually no detectable static at all. No loud pops or clicks what so ever, a few light static tics only. Unbelievable. Bursting in with 'The Real Me' this great track often plays with lots of loud static, plays here with great audio, NO background static, and certainly not any audio faults. 'Quadrophenia', such a hard track for the album, nearly always prone to heavy wear, here sounds great. Still no static and no pops or clicks at all, and none between tracks. Silent run ins to 'Cut My Hair', it sounds crisp and clear. Great clear audio and just a single pop in the middle of the track. 'The Punk and the Godfather' also sounds great, no pops or anything obtrusive. The music plays superbly, virtually NO detectable static at all, rounding off side 1. with great bright sound. I can also confirm (although it hardly seems necessary with vinyl of this calibre) that the sound is just spectacular throughout, and there is certainly not a hint of distortion anywhere on either vinyls.
Side 2. of Quadrophenia virtually always starts off with heavy static. The intro is very quiet and sparse also. Here there is some light static at the start of 'I'm the One ', (the kind you would find on any vinyl, even in MINT condition) but not a single loud loud pop or click throughout, and the static is extremely light and in no way obtrusive. 'The Dirty Jobs' plays really well with absolutely minimal static and No pops or other unwanted noises. Astoundingly clear audio. 'Helpless Dancer' with another very quiet intro again plays with lovely clear sound, and not a single pop or click. 'Is it in My Head' sounds great, nice clear sound with just a bit of the lightest occasional static. A bit of light static between tracks but only very briefly. 'I've Had Enough' plays superbly, even and when we get the first very quiet interlude of 'Love Rain on Me', it really sounds wonderful and crystal clear, fantastic audio.
Side 3. begins with the iconic '5.15', which sounds great. It starts off with the paired down platform sound track that plays with barely any detectable light static, the music plays with crystal clear audio. Absolutely sensational. 'Sea and Sand' also plays great, with no loud pops or clicks, and minimal occasional light background static, the kind found on all vinyls, but any static is extremely quiet and momentary. 'Drowned', sings out with silence in the run ins and quiet areas. Great music with great clarity, and so hard to find with this type of sound. 'Bell Boy', again so often playing with poor distorted sound, but on this press sounding great. Crystal clear audio, maintaining the extremely high standard of sound on this exceptional 1st pressing. Not a single pop or click throughout, just superb clear sound.
'Doctor Jimmy' starts side 4. with superb clear sound on that long stormy introduction. 'The Rock' also plays with crystal clear sound, no loud pops or clicks, and a great clear introduction. One slight tic in the middle of the track only. The final track on side 4. is the massive 'Love Reign Over Me', a long and complex track with many quiet parts that are prone to heavy static. Not here. Its crystal clear, with no obvious interference at all. The quiet interlude in the middle sounds spot on, so clear and no interference to be found, not even a single static tic. The long track just sounds superb, with no loud pops or clicks, rounding off this Who masterpiece with just fantastic clear audio.
The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, the vocals which come through with tremendous power. Its the same with the bass guitar and drums, whilst the guitars come through crisp and clear. The tonal quality make this a sensational pressing. With the clear and extra loud First cut engineering giving the audio a vibrant sound which cannot be beaten. A great all round example of this classic vinyl. Staggering first (stereo) mix, unlike the re-issues which lack the impact. A great all round example of this great vinyl.
This is a great Audio pleasure and I would have to give the audio a full NEAR MINT grading.
THE VINYL
A superb set of glossy vinyls, and a really thick pressing. Deep clear grooves that can only be found on the original early pressings, this vinyl set have had 1 play as well as my audio test, they look and sound unplayed. On initial inspection this vinyl looks completely unmarked. Only under an intense spot light can I see one or two of the faintest markings on side 2 and 4 only and an ultra light thumbnail scratch on side 1 only. This is not a needle mark but a short 1" light line that is completely non sounding. The record has great shine, with no scratches, and literally just a couple (ultra) light handling marks / paper removal marks. Any minor surface marks or very light and non sounding, perhaps being caused by handing and sleeve removal. On the whole this is a really stunning example.
Grades at NEAR MINT.
THE LABELS
Superb 1st press labels. One or two of the faintest tiny spindle traces and no marks or writing what so ever, and NO brush marks that these labels seem prone to. Great all round examples!
Grades at NEAR MINT.
VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING:
Yes, NONE visible what so ever when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.
THE COVER
ULTRA RARE 1st Press unlaminated WIDE SPINE cover in superb condition. These 1st pressings come with a large, heavy booklet inside, with a collection of black and white images. This is a stunning example that would be hard to better!
The covers of QUADROPHENIA are made from soft, medium thick card, in a MATT grainy finish, and are very prone to wear. They also contain a large, heavy photo booklet, stapled inside, which is nearly always ripped away from the inner cover.
This great cover is bright and clean, with very little wear. The opening edges are very square and un frayed. The back cover is nice and clean, with NO ring wear, which is very unusual for these covers. The booklet is is great condition and is still firmly attached. Unusually the heavy booklet is still fully attached and there is no paper lift just around the staples.
The Spine is true and does show some minor edge rubbing and handling wear, but it is fairly minor. The spine text is totally intact and undamaged.
A great all round example of this rare cover, I would grade it at EXCELLENT condition.!!
THE INNERS
Both original poly lined inner sleeves in in stunning EXCELLENT PLUS condition.
This is a TOP set with very little to fault. There are NO splits to the sides. There are NO tears to the front or opening edges, which are nice and crisp. All in all a really great and ultra rare 1st press set. It would be hard to find better originals!
The records will come with a brand new set of white inner sleeves.
RARITY
A complete UK TRACK Label Vinyl of QUADROPHENIA in decent condition is scarce. The vinyl is so often played so much, heavily marked, scratched, with noisy, poor and distorted sound.
The cover is hard to find without serious wear, even modestly worn examples are scarce, the book is always separated and torn with heavy corner wear. Finding a cover like this, with a thick pressed set of virtually un marked vinyls, fantastic!.
Finding a 1st press set in this condition, with A1 Matrix and stunning cover makes this an absolute gem!
MAKING THIS A FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY TO OWN AN EXTREMELY RARE PIECE OF MUSICAL HISTORY.

SCRUPULOUS EXAMINATION and TESTING:
All our records are play tested on highly sensitive equipment to ensure the sound quality and accuracy of description. We aim to give a precise and concise description of the sound, pointing out the slightest defect so that you know exactly what you are buying. We aim to describe all records as accurately as possible, and offer a full refund on return if for any reason you are not completely happy with the item description.
VINYL SOUND - PLEASE NOTE:
Highest quality vinyl with clear sound is rare, and what we always aim for. We only sell records that play with TOP AUDIO performance; super clear sound uninterrupted by hiss or other interference. Even with the cleanest pressing you will find occasional static or occasional light tics during playback, caused by a build of dust in the grooves. This is clearly different from the distortion, loud pops, repeating tics or clicks that are found on heavily played and worn pieces of vinyl. Any static build up will reduce when played, and we advise a light clean between plays for optimal performance.
