SUBSTITUTE
Here’s an artifact from a time when Decca didn’t quite have a solid grip on The Who. They had been releasing records by the band since “My Generation” back a year earlier, in February of 1965.
Meanwhile, back in the UK, the Who were splitting off from Shel Talmy and starting up their own Reaction Records label (with Polydor) and instantly got hit with an injunction (March 1966). While the mess is being sorted, this song, a new track they’d cut for Reaction got licensed to Atco in the US – not the usual Decca release as their old contract called for. A few weeks into the mess and “Substitute” is out in the US. Without a proper flipside, it’s filled out with a group of studio musicians playing “Waltz For A Pig” on the flip.
It didn’t last long. Soon the single would get deleted, and the track would wind up becoming one of those lost released, not appearing on an Lp until many years later. The flipside would disappear altogether.
