THE WHO - THIS IS FOR THEM. LIVE IN BUFFALO 1979. 2 LP SET.
ROCK SOLID RECORDS, SERIAL RSR 235 A TO D.
This 2 LP set is a recording of the concert at The Memorial Auditorium, Buffalo, New York, on Tuesday December 4th 1979. It was the night after the disaster when 11 people were crushed to death at the Riverfront Coliseum at Cincinnati, Ohio. Hence the title. The tragedy came about after over 18,000 tickets were sold instantly, selling out the show. The venue was using 'Festival Seating', which basically meant that the earlier you got there, the better seat you got. Due to this, thousands of Fans arrived early, waiting outside the Venue. As the time drew nearer for The Concert to start, The Who started their sound check. When the Fans at the rear of the queue heard this, they assumed the show had started and began shoving their way forward and tried to rush into the doors, which were still closed, resulting in those Fans at the front being trampled, and ending in tragedy. This resulted in the banning of festival seating in Cincinnati for 25 years.
The Who knew nothing of the tragedy outside, and were informed after the show had ended. The night after, (this show) The Band performed without doing any sound checks, and in spite of the previus nights tragedy, still managed to put on a great show, dedicating the Concert to the victims. They also sent flowers to the Funerals. Pete Townshend later said that "If it had happened inside, I would never have played again."
You can see the tracklistings on the photos, so I will just give the gradings.
The cover is a thick card, with some great photos of The Band front and rear. It is solid all round, with just some very minor ageing. Spine, top and bottom edges all intact. Opening edges still sharp. The 2 records are clean and shiny, with only a few light surface scratches spread over both records. Labels are clean as you can see.
Overall it is an excellent album, marking one of the darker moments in The Who's history.
