Label/Format: Track – original deeper black matt finish. Later copies had grey-black labels with a more semi-shiny surface and invariably pressed thinner with higher matrix numbers.

Label Conditions: Two very impressive examples: clean, fresh and attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle marks, that on typically revealing dark labels, show little.

Rarity: Taken purely on the title, this is not a rare album as such. But clean, lightly played very early pressed copies are a different matter. Also this copy includes the very collectable and scarcer ‘HEAD HUNTERS’ ‘Get a Head’ inner sleeve. This is one of the most sort after inserts and early copies of this album with this famous insert are most prized. This beautiful vintage collage insert includes pictures of bands and artists that recorded on Polydor, Track, Atlantic, MGM, Verve, Karma Sutra, DG and Buddah Records – sounds a lot of labels, but try finding this inner easily. Not only is this included with possibly the greatest rock album ever made, and in superb condition. Please check out the pictures of this elusive inner, this a work-of-art in it’s own right.

Brief Artist & Album Info: ‘Who’s Next’ is simply one of my favourite rock albums of all-time. This amazing set has it all – stunning vocals, incredible musicianship and songs played to virtuoso rock standards. Just listen to rock’s greatest ever drummer (well he gets my vote anyway), Keith Moon’s power-house percussion is top of the premier league and sets standards few others even got close too. This is a master-class of quality, it simply shows up modern music for what it really is – mediocre at best – this is one of the most exciting records ever issued. Most-all collectors will already know and probably already own this masterpiece, but this lovely copy with the rarer inner makes this extra special. Every song, is a classic, faultless and flawless, this is Daltrey, Moon, Entwistle and Townshend at the peak of their powers – timeless brilliance and no collection could or should ever be without a copy. Always a pleasure to offer such a fine and first issue too, the cover has very modest traces of wear and the record plays practically perfectly with all the dynamic fidelity only the early-pressed records really offer. That elusive Head Hunter’s inner puts the icing on the cake.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably worthy of a (+): a single format, unlaminated and matt finished with smooth surfaces. Also, very prone to wear. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press. Includes the scarce Head Hunter’s Inner in beautiful condition.

Cover Front: A very attractive front with barely any rubbing or grubbiness. A few very light and gentle – also mainly very small, surface creases that show little. Any rim impression very faint indeed with no real ring wear. A very faint price sticker residue trace near the top right corner, again, it shows little with no tearing.

Cover Back: The matt black back is always difficult and challenging, seldom seen devoid of considerable wear and especially ring wear. This is largely the same as the front, with a few very light surface creases. Any rubbing or hint hint rim rubbing very light indeed, this too on a very dark black surface. Both front and back give only very mild clues to the true vintage of this cover, now over 40-years-old, and will take a fair degree of beating.

Top Edge: Very straight with barely any wear.

Bottom Edge: Again straight with any rub traces tiny and faint, this being the storage edge means many are well worn or even threadbare.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring reasonably mild as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid and straight with minimal compression, the ends are quite deeply pinched in manufacture. They retain fine shape with hardly any rubbing. This is one of the finest spines I have seen on a first issue cover. All the text is unworn if centred a little high. The lack of rubbing to the black ink face and folds is a welcome bonus and any tiny hairline creases are super-fine and faint.

Corners: Any rip rubs are also tiny and faint, very fine to excellent shape is retained.

Cover Summary: An impressive example of a thin card, classic cover – the lack of ring wear, rubbing and grubbiness is not so easily found. So often seen with sticker tears and other damage, this a splendid one and it should please many collectors, but not the absolute perfectionists.

The ‘Head Hunters’ – Get a Head Inner: MINT(–): a famous inner sleeve that was NOT included with all copies of this record, far from it in fact. This is lined and with robust flipback construction (all immaculate), with barely anything to fault. I have rarely, if ever, seen a better one. The only microscopic blemish is a tiny nick on the top entrance edge (and I DO mean a NICK). With a rich dark, matt finish, this can fade and age badly too, yes it can even suffer ring wear and often does. This has escaped it totally because the record was not stored inside this one for any great length of time (there lies the difference). The adhesive on the edges has lightly browned on the inside, but hardly registers on the outside – the side that counts of course. So very little aged and the edges unsplit with no repairs. A classic rare inner with all the artists you would imagine included in the collage from the aforementioned labels. A select few are: Led Zeppelin; Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention; Rory Gallagher; CSN; Ritchie Havens; The Who, Melanie et al. A class item, flipback folded, getting rare in-itself and highly prized and sort-after, especially so in such amazing condition.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and side one practically Mint(-), my highest grading, with only the faintest of faint surface traces seen critically under bright angled light. Very clean, shiny, intense black and quite solidly pressed. With so many examples played into oblivion, this early copy looks very lightly used and a gorgeous record that should please most-all collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This sublime album plays up to, and most all even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, totally distortion-free sound (never take this for granted on a complex recording like this), all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound – an album to play loud, the power of this record still astonishes even today and I never tire of hearing a top copy. Any surface sounds barely even registered, no pops or pressing noises and practically devoid of any clicks. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and looked after. A copy that will prove very difficult to find significantly better and merits strong recommendation. A copy that thrilled me from start to finish and yes this really could be the greatest rock album ever made, I call that a Bargain – the best you ever had? – I feel another play coming on.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
