Description
The first recorded collection of songs from "The Wizard of Oz"
Decca Records No. 74, released March 1940.
Although the set claims to be an "Original Cast Album", the songs were not, in fact, the versions used in the movie itself. In anticipation of the film's release, Decca had Judy Garland record "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "The Jitterbug" for a single release in 1939. The latter song was cut from the movie; in this version the Ken Darby Trio takes the part of the Cowardly Lion (Garney Bell), the Tin Woodman (Bud Lyon), and the Scarecrow (Harold Arlen, also the composer of the music). In early 1940, the two songs were packaged with other music from the movie, recorded by the Ken Darby Trio and backed by Victor Young and His Orchestra, to create this 4-disk set. Judy Garland is the only cast member to actually appear on the album. The songs were re-released by Decca many times over the years, next as another four 78 set in 1951 all the way to many, vinyl 12 inch LPs but this was the FIRST!
The inside of the covers include 22 stills from the movie with narrative text telling the entire story. There are also signatures from Judy Garland, Victor Young, Harold Arlen, and E.Y. Harburg under the first four stills. There was a six page insert included in some copies which is not present here.
I have seen many copies of this album and this is by far the finest all around example of this rare, historic piece of movie memorabilia I have run across
All too often with this release you find missing or damaged records, heavy wear on the outside jacket or other problems. One problem may not be present but some of the others usually are.
This set has exceptional high grade records, with great gloss, no marks and all visually appear to be in excellent to near mint condtion. The interior sleeves are in perfect condition, uniform and with no cuts or holes or separations.
The exterior jacket has vibrant graphics, front and back with no surface wear, a nearly perfect spine (unheard of for these sets) and very light edge wear. No writing is present anywhere on the album. No missing pieces, crunched corners or other common jacket problems.
As mentioned above it is missing the text only booklet but the interior 22 stills are in great shape with a bit of flaking on the bottom of the back cover set of photos
