The music on this disc has been offered under a plethora of titles. However, regardless of how they might be presented, the fact remains that these are among Thelonious Monk's most seminal sides during his brief stint (1952-1954) as a bandleader for Prestige. In a fit of irony, the would-be title track, "Monk's Mood," isn't among the seven originals included here. This oversight is more than made up for in regards to the definitive bop that is included. In addition to the strength of Monk's originals, the personnel is key to the success of these masterworks and primary examples of the bebop jazz subgenre. Monk's often lop-sided rhythms and seemingly atonal performance style is immeasurably strengthened by the support of his sidemen. The ten pieces featured here are taken from three sessions. Chronologically, these include Monk's first two recording dates -- on October 15 and December 18, 1952, respectively. The personnel for the first (October 15) includes the trio of Garry Mapp (bass), Art Blakey (drums), and Monk, while the second (December 18) features Max Roach (drums). The final date in September of 1954 replaces Blakey and adds Percy Heath (bass). Each of the performances delineate Monk's uncanny ability to indelibly personalize not only his own compositions, but also the cover versions of pop standards "These Foolish Things," "Sweet & Lovely," and especially his practically indescribable touch on the piano solo rendition of "Just a Gigolo." There is quite literally no subpar material or uninspired performances on Monk's Moods. Even tracks carried over from his prior Blue Note repertoire -- such as "Reflections" or the charmingly descriptive "Trinkle Tinkle" -- are replete with brilliant playing and sensitive interaction from the respective quintets.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The album comes with its original, 'rice paper' inner sleeve (typically used in the 50’s and very early 60’s) which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years! We believe that, despite great technological progress, these early 'rice paper' inner sleeves provided a degree of protection MUCH HIGHER than any other material used ever since.

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings)

(d)          The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(e)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant);  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) ; On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a small original price sticker, which may be possible to remove with a little effort (we did not attempt to)

-         A visible scratch mark noted on the back panel  

-         Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)  (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No water damage

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
