This is Prestige Records (PRLP 7159):  MONK'S MOODS by  THELONIOUS MONK, released in 1958.  It appears to be a monaural reissue of Prestige Records' Thelonious Monk Trio released in 1954.  More about that later in the text.  Please keep reading.  

The jacket has a glossy front and flat back surface: both are about MINT.  Seams are intact and sturdy; spine is strong, perfectly blocked with printing dead center.  It's difficult to find fault with this pristine cover -- back surface shows the first, barely visible signs of aging (see photos) but maintains its integrity and pretty surface just fine.  Original inner sleeve is also pictured showing a few wrinkles but no tears or outstanding flaws.  We have housed the jacket within a snug Mylar outer sleeve for the ultimate in protection.   Back cover lists Rudy Van Gelder as engineer, Bob Weinstock as supervisor, and liner notes by Ira Gitler. 

The LP is stunning: appears MINT and plays MINT.  It is, in fact, the more rare mono version.   Let's take it one step at a time.  A and B sides of the deep groove label are near perfect showing no spindle marks and no other outstanding flaws or blemishes of any kind.  Again, one can see the first hints of age in the form of foxing but its so slight it might as well be a ghost.  The playing surface contains not one single buff, hairline mark, scratch, anything.  Note: It is of the "thin edge" pressings.  Matrices contain the embedded RVG stamp and one can actually see where the original stock number of Thelonious Monk Trio (7027) has been etched out by hand and replaced with the new number (7159).  Essentially, what we have here IS the original 1954 release with updated labels and fresh new jacket making this LP the rarest of the rare and suitable for the most discerning collector.  We have housed the record in a MFSL inner sleeve and packaged it apart from its original cover within a plain, heavy-stock jacket.  Both original and plain (black) cover have been contained in box set size Mylar bag with flap closed.

Thelonious Sphere Monk was an American original and founder of the bebop/hard bop sound, bringing it to the piano as Ammons had to the sax in a highly percussive manner with abrupt hesitations and long measures of silence, with melodic twists both elegant and radical.  He later evolved away from bebop but never lost his idiosyncratic style neither as composer nor performer.  He is one of only five jazz musicians to be featured on the cover of Time Magazine (as of 2010), the others being Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Wynton Marsalis and Dave Brubeck.  Monk died of a stroke on February 17, 1982.  He was posthumously awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (1993) and a Pulitzer Prize Special Citation (2006).  His friend Art Blakey told reporters that Monk excelled  at both checkers and chess.
