Monk's Music is often cited as one of the focal points of Thelonious Monk's six-year affiliation (1955-1961) with the Riverside label. Although the original disc clocked in at slightly over 30 minutes, packed into that half hour are not only the introduction of a few of Monk's signature compositions, but also some amazing interactions from the assembled ensemble. Joining Thelonious Monk (piano) during these two recording sessions are Ray Copeland (trumpet), Gigi Gryce (alto sax), Coleman Hawkins (tenor sax), John Coltrane (tenor sax), Wilbur Ware (bass), and Art Blakey (drums). The true meaning of the album's title exists beyond just Thelonious, as the opening sacred prelude, "Abide With Me," was written by William H. Monk. This brief piece features only the horn quartet, foreshadowing their importance throughout the album. The angular stride style featured during the chorus of "Well You Needn't" is tackled with the same nimble authority as Monk's completely unfettered solos. If his ability to swing and his utilization of atomic clock accuracy have ever been questioned, the answer lies no further. So utterly free and fantastic, certain passages command immediate review to be fully comprehended. Hearing Coltrane and Hawkins together is admittedly part of the charm in these sides. "Ruby, My Dear" is bathed in the smoky essence of Hawkins' rich textures and Coltrane's playful cat-and-mouse aggression. Blakey gently propels the rhythm, never getting in the way and sporting a serene snare groove throughout. "Off Minor" is largely led by Monk, with solos that follow into and out of the memorable chorus that sparkles with the full involvement of the horn and rhythm sections. The same is true for this definitive version of "Epistrophy" -- perhaps the zenith collaborative effort between Coltrane and Monk. Additionally, Blakey is in top form, with a solo that borders on spastic precision.

“Epistrophy” has an interesting place in Thelonious Monk’s voluminous catalogue. The composition -- which is co-credited to drummer Kenny Clarke -- ultimately spanned Monk’s entire performance career. Eventually the track became a sonic bookend to Monk’s live sets in much the same way that Miles Davis incorporated “The Theme” into his respective performances. The perky and idiosyncratic melody guides the tune throughout a wide spectrum of interpretative possibilities. These range from Milt Jackson’s sinuous vibraphone leads on the Genius of Modern Music, Vol. 1 (1948) to the stride piano runs that informed his mid-to-late ‘60s versions. Virtually every era of Monk’s live recordings include, at the very least, a coda of “Epistrophy”. Among the notable readings are the September 12, 1958 set featuring John Coltrane -- available on Discovery! Live at the Five Spot (1993). There are also several idiosyncratic differences in the multiple renderings found within the 1963 archival release Monk in Tokyo (2001) or the three compact, yet frenetic versions on the Big Band and Quartet in Concert set -- also from 1963. The composition’s limber allowance for improvisation has also made it somewhat of a neo jazz standard covered by a plethora of artists as diverse as jazz itself -- including Woody Herman (Fiftieth Anniversary Tour), Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis Live At Minton’s), Bud Powell (Lonely One) and Eric Dolphy (Last Date) .

Thelonious Monk was one of the true Geniuses of modern music. The enigmatic pianist, composer, band leader and Jazz guru was responsible for some of the most imaginative, innovative, moody, quirky and otherwise revolutionary compositions in modern Jazz; his music has been used as a template for many aspiring Jazz musicians and acolytes. We are proud to present here the original stereo pressing of what many believe is his finest, most enduring work. (certainly, the memorable cover artwork itself deserves to be enshrined in the Jazz Cover Artwork Hall of Fame).

 (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has all three seams (top, bottom and spine) partially split,  as follows:

-         Top seam: between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters.

-         Bottom seam: less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters.

-         Spine: between 6 and 8 inches  /15 to 20 centimeters.  This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-         Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine   (nothing significant)

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on the spine and bottom seam

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels  (except for the stereo sticker)

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
