The listener is given a front row seat in the studio as the pianist and his assembly of all-stars, including tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins and John Coltrane, the underrated alto saxophonist Gigi Gryce and trumpeter Ray Copeland, plus bassist Wilbur Ware and the fiery drummer Art Blakey tackled the leader's demanding charts. The obvious highlights include the extensive workouts of "Well, You Needn't" and "Epistrophy," though Hawkins' lush solo in his feature, "Ruby, My Dear," joined only by the rhythm section, marks the summit of the session.
