Label Conditions: Both in truly stunning conditions, almost like brand new. Ultra clean, fresh and attractive and I am struggling to find a single spindle mark.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Originals from 1965 are rare and if one even exists in this condition, it would command a huge price. This early boxed version is hardly common either and this is one of the most outstandingly clean and unplayed Decca records I think I have ever seen. With a cover and record little short of mint and offering pristine sound, this is not to be dismissed lightly. This 1970s pressing indeed looks unplayed, how many originals could ever be said to be like that? The one huge advantage a later pressing offers is the likelihood it avoided the heavy tracking old record players of the 1960s. Thus so many of these poor-selling beat albums are seen totally trashed, written off by vast amounts of playing with thick, heavyweight, often chipping stylus. This is a truly beautiful set, the record gleams like new and the cover is simply pristine. For fans of the rare titles, this is a huge opportunity to own this mono Decca album looking and playing like new, I can safely state, I will never see or hear a better one.

Brief Artist & Album Info: One of the greatest RnB albums ever, and one of the most elusive and difficult 60s beat albums to track down. Sounding very similar in many respects to the early Rolling Stones and even The Animals the relative failure of this debut album is something of a mystery and available copies of this title are very few and far between – even the early boxed examples. Including fourteen quite stunning tracks, the cover states all true to themselves – Defiant! Angry! Sad! – the cover fails to state – BRILLIANT! A fiery and uncompromising band formed in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1963. Even from these early days Morrison’s vocal class and emotive power was evident and a real star was in his recording infancy. Even though a 70s repressing, this opened my eyes when I saw it simply because of the quite stunning conditions. I could hardly wait to get this on to my LP12 – and it did not disappoint with pristine perfect sound throughtout with not a single blemish noted at all. The sound simply blew me away, I gave this a fair burst at moderately high volume just to hear all the magnificent rawness this record has to offer. Pure brilliance, dynamic and very loud RnB of the highest calibre brilliance I have ever heard. For me anyway, Them even surpass the early Stones music which makes the poor sales of this monumental classic all the confusing. A record so clean and unmarked, I will indeed break my usual protocol and grade it Mint. The cover is just the same, my only small reservation is, the Decca inner is a blue one, correct or not, not sure. This record is wonderfully produced by Tommy Scott, a Scotsman, who make these Irishmen sound unforgettable. A rare classic, one of the greatest albums ever in my humble opinion and you will never find a more beautiful copy to enjoy the analogue experience it offers. This Them debut will make you realise just how good this legendary Irish band were and the lack of justice in them not being the superstars that others achieved with probably lesser albums, yes Them Angry Young Them really IS that good.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT: a word I refuse to use often and rarely, if ever on it’s own. This is a jaw-dropping cover by any standard and simply looks just made. A single format made with typically thin card and the front laminated with Clarifoil. Printed and made in England.

Lamination & Front: A truly stunning front that simply looks brand new with laminate that gleams with freshness with not even a hint of any friction rubs or dulling and barely a trace of any record impression. How many covers have you ever seen without a single laminate crease, including no hairlines to the edges? Well this has none at all, the only microscopic blemish (if indeed you can call it that) is a tiny tip crease to the bottom right corner tip (and I do mean the very tip), if this is the only thing I can fault, well it should just reitterate what this astonishing cover is like. The Clarifoil laminate is smooth as ice that retains a gorgeous clarity so the early young band can be seen to absolute maximum advantage. All collectors will know just how volatile Clarifoil laminate is on these thin card covers. Most have issues with lifting, well again, this has none whatsoever, even the spine edge is fully adhered. The one tiny corner tip crease apart, this is pure perfection – the only problem will be, you will have to judge your other covers to this one because I feel confident, few, if any will match up to this truly amazing one.

Cover Back: Again in incredible condition, this white unprotected back is still as white and ungrubbied as the day it left the factory. Any surface blemishes when scrutinised under light are minuscule and there are no ring marks, creases (bar the tiny corner one) or ageing at all. The laminate end line near the spine edge is still clean, many get very grubby over time and this is still quite an old cover for sure. A beautiful clean back to complement that jaw-dropping front.

Top Edge: Like new.

Bottom Edge: Like New.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, razor sharp with no wear or thickening and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Absolutely pristine: solid, straight, uncompressed and square. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate which remains pure white and ultra smooth to the fingertip as do all the other edges.

Corners: The one tiny tip crease apart, all look new again with pristine pointed shape retained.

Cover Summary: A cover of immense beauty and one I certainly will not forget in a hurry. A world-class example of connoisseur standard that lays down the gauntlet to ever be beaten. This remarkable, beautiful item should please all collectors, even the most discerning can confidently apply.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT: if I cannot grade this record as full mint, I guess I never would be able to at all. A supreme visual copy that is ultra clean, fresh, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. Actually wondering if this has ever made the trip out of the cover let alone been played. Two immaculate playing surfaces that gleam. Visually a super record that should please all collectors again.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This gorgeous record plays up to it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A typical raw production so typical of the beat albums of this period. No surface sounds, no pops, no clicks, no pressings sounds, a typical superbly made Decca record and an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will even match, let alone outperform this boxed mono pressing I feel sure. How can perfection be beaten? Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has barely been played, if indeed at all and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove nigh-on impossible to find better and merits my highest possible recommendation and accolade. This is a truly outstanding piece.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. Customers requests or special needs for P&P will be respected if at all possible but ‘Signed-For’ posting is NOT an option anymore. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
